Both the 4.0L engine in the 718 cars and the 3.0L engine in the 992 cars use the new generation of fuel injectors which are causing this raucous. I take you at your word but since your car has the same injectors it is going to make that sound… maybe you aren’t noticing it. Or maybe there’s something else going on that has eliminated the sound from the injectors.

Well it's certainly not the ticking sound being described in this thread, or like the example videos shared either. I don't hear anything while I'm in the car, whether that's sitting idle or driving. I plan to take the car out tomorrow, so I'll start the car and stand outside while it warms up to see if I notice it.

Would love to hear clips! Every 992 and 718 4.0 I've ever heard has the sound to some degree. Albeit to my ears, the 992's ticking sound is significantly quieter on average.

Not a 4l but mine is the 2.5l BS, ticking noise is driving me insane. Does anyone know what this might be? Constant at idle whatever the engine temp.

The noise is the high pressure fuel injectors. This has been discussed previously and someone even posted a video of these injectors functioning on the bench and exhibiting the noise.

It hasn't sounded like that before but has been getting gradually louder, I've owned the car for 2 years. Would some injector cleaner do it any good?

According to the Porsche Newsroom Release for GT4/Spyder this new engine has a "first" ever DFI/Injector system. So comparing to other non 718 4.0L doesn't seem valid.

Press specifics below:

"For the first time ever, piezo injectors are used for direct fuel injection in a high-revving naturally aspirated engine. They split each injection process into up to five individual injections. The centrally positioned injectors of the direct fuel injection (DFI) system are controlled by piezo elements for the first time in an engine capable of achieving these speeds. They open the injection valves by expanding upon application of a control voltage. When there is no current flowing, the crystals contract and the valve closes again. As a result, the fuel is finely atomized with a maximum fuel pressure of 2,900 psi (200 bar), and combustion is even more precise..."

You are not going to hear a "ticking" from an piezo crystal injector firing up to 5 times per injection process.

It's the high/low pressure solenoids managing the 2,900 psi (200 bar) fuel rail.

That does not sound like the same thing we've all been discussing. And it doesn't sound right or good to me. I'd get it in and see what the dealer says.

Washed my car today, started it and let it run for a few mins, couldnt hear it, tried recording at the rear of the car, then on the side near the rear wheel, couldnt capture any ticking noise. Where is it best place to capture a recording? Is it normally heard from inside the car, or outside?

I've recorded the ticking (#151 in this thread and others) in a distance of about 1 m besides the lateral air intakes and about 0,5 m above the ground. You should take care to place the car on a minimal sound reflecting ground (for example a grass area) and with no buildings or walls in the environment as sound reflections disturb the analysis of the recordings.
If you can't hear or record tickings, your car is one of the non ticking 718 (very well existing but obviously a minority).
With my own GTS 4.0 ticking has decreased from dominant sound on idling when new to nearly not perceptible after some thousand miles. But it is there again on restart of the hot engine which was shut off before for about 1/4 hour - a quite normal effect !

(detailed explanation -> https://www.718forum.com/threads/dis...7/#post-289178 - Post #18)

Reason of the ticking is one or more stucking hydraulic lifter(s). Seams to be dramatic but is not. Valve system apparently withstands this increased valve clearance without any problems. There are (worldwide) no reports about engine damages caused by this reason.

This is just more opinion stated as fact. I don’t think anyone here believes every car rolling off the line has stuck lifters.

Or maybe some people just have better hearing than others? Or are just more ****?

Or both?
