I believe this was mentioned in an earlier post but in CA at least there is a 3rd party option of using vinyl plates that matches your exact plates. Technically, this option is not yet available to the public as it's a beta test but you can be part of the beta test. I've seen one Tesla in my area drive around with it but don't know exactly if it's legit or not. Supposedly you get a letter from sacramento that says you're part of the beta test. Again no personal experience.
Frankly, I wish someone would just introduce a bill in CA to not require front plates. Frankly, 99% of people not installing front plates don't install because it makes the front end of the car look hideous. I've read various articles where they mention that CA requires them because of people trying to avoid paying tolls or avoiding authority but I don't really buy that because you still have a rear plate. I think if we were given more options, people in CA would probably be more willing to put on a front plate in some form or fashion than to completely not have one.
The other option is if CA doesn't budge on the front plate requirement, maybe give CA the option of getting a much smaller rectangluar front plate as an option. I've seen some pictures of cars from like Dubai and their front plates (at least it looks like a front plate as I can't read it) are super small. I'd be willing to do that as it doesn't really impact the look of the car too much but it would still be complaint.
I know people are discussing the option of using tow hooks and personally, I find that using the tow hook method as a permanent solution looks silly. It makes the front look totally off since the plate is now off centered and jutting out from the bumper. I understand if you had to have it on there for inspection but CA doesn't require inspections. If I had to permanently mount a plate, it would have to go in the center for it to look right to me.
Made some changes to my front plate install. Reconfigured the installation brackets and added a nice plate frame. If you must run a front plate, I am of the opinion that you should find a way to mount it in the center, and make it as visually appealing as possible. I really don't understand the appeal of the tow hook option. This is okay if you just want to install the plate for a state inspection and then promptly remove it, but if you are actually going to keep the plate on the car for any length of time, I think it looks horrible, aesthetically. As posted before, it is easy to configure a mounting bracket using the OEM piece that doesn't require drilling into the front of the bumper.
Nice! In mid August they told me they had no plans to make one. Glad they did. This is prob best option. But I don't think their mounts can support a plate cover.

Same. I should send them back the one I bought and tried to make work. Actually that thing looks like it’s gonna cost some ground clearance. Not good.

Yeah...that was my first thought as well. Then I was thinking I would only use it Downtown Portland as that’s the only place that tickets for front plate (while street parking). Then thought who am I kidding, I would never take it down there... Always drive our Macan with the kid. I’m going naked.
Because with the GT4/Spyder that location is painted surface where on the GTS it’s plastic. They specifically state not to apply on PPF as it will peel and lift.

I noticed the warning but didn't realize that PPF wouldn't have enough adhesive strength to support a license plate holder, plate, and bracket, which would probably come out to 2 lbs or 1 kg. I suppose w/ enough planning you could get the PPF shop to cut a hole in PPF to accommodate the mount. At least for me, my car's not due to arrive until the spring, and was planning to flatbed it to a PPF shop and so may be able to make this work.In the event I ultimately change my mind, it'll be on the underside of the bumper so you won't really see any stone chips and/or won't care with my shoddy touch-up paint job.
I ended up ordering the "universal" kit from Craig's Custom Mustang Brackets and it arrived today. I don't have any pictures to share yet, as I rushed it over to my PPF installer before they closed so they could make space for the portion that attaches to the car, but wow, it's pretty nice! http://ccmustangbrackets.com/product...plate-bracket/
I have a GT4, and the universal kit will work fantastic. I did a test fit, and the part that attaches to the car with 3M double stick tape can go up to an inch back from the opening of the mouth and still have some adjustment available. The portion that the plate physically attaches to in stainless steel and seems quite robust, without being overly heavy.
I'll get pics next week when I get the car back.
BTW, I chose to go this option as it was a really good value, and unlike the other option that has the quick release that attaches to the bottom of the splitter, I don't lose any ground clearance, and I think the plate looks better where the factory intended it, rather than lower in the mouth opening. Additionally, the other option would stick our further from the bumper, and I thought that would look a little goofy. Plus, no air blockage to the radiator using this option.
