I think what Grant is saying is that once you get to 90-95% on a track, the Rear engine with the superior rear suspension will have an advantage.....what happens is that until you get to that point the mid-engine is a joy to drive (well balance, with good predictable handling) but once you cross that threshold things get interesting and you really have to finesse the car....but still the rear engine 911 will pull better out of turns and have less weight transfer under heavy threshold braking.

Not apples to apples....
Full build Race Car (open canvas) vs Street, production car (compromises with safety first)
Also..one of the biggest reason to move to mid engine in the RSR is aero....just take a look at that rear diffuser.
Once you go to a full race car it does make sense given the flexibility it provides in various area.....

As mentioned, the shift to mid-engine for the RSR was not made to address any handling issue. It was made because the engine is in the way on a rear engine platform when trying to make massive downforce with the under-body diffuser (that has to rise in the area where it would be blocked by a rear engine).

My GT4 with mods can't match a 991.2 GT3 time (usually 1-2 sec slower), similar driver skills with me driving the heck out of the GT4 on Pirelli DHs.
The 718 GT4 my close the gap but will never match the .2 GT3/RS level of performance.... as Grant says the level of the parts used on the GT3/RS is way higher than the Gt4 (718 and 981).
I also agree with him on the handling characteristics once you are above 90%.....the rear engine with the RWS and multi-link provides a huge advantage.
You are getting to the point of reasoning why I'm very skeptical of a GT4RS.....it's a very tight fit on PAG lineup and the price delta between it and a GT3 will be so small you might as well go for it....be that 991.2 or 992.

Not gospel for sure, but the recent Panorama magazine said the GT4 RS is coming and they did not equivocate. I think Porsche would sell as many GT4 RSs as they could make and I would guess MSRP starting ~$130k.

If so then that is a steep price over a regular GT4, more than $30,000 is a big jump!

Don't take what you read in there as gospel. They have been known to regurgitate forum chatter.

I think it will be interesting when Porsche prices the GT4/Spyder with PDK. If there is a significant cost to that option, then this will push the RS price higher. If the GT4/Spyder get PDK for free (like GT3, although PDK came before Manual there), then it makes sense not to price the RS so high.

It's the other way around. The manual is free because of the baked in upcharge for the PDK-S in the GT3 base price.

So theoretically, if there was a rear multi-link suspension (highly unlikely) and PDK-S (also probably unlikely) in a GT4RS what would your thoughts be? I am constantly going back and forth on if the idea makes sense given one can spend a little more and get a used GT3. I am coming into this as a MT 911T owner (which I love), never having driven a GT4 (drove a base 4 banger Cayman as a loaner and was unimpressed). Thinking about keeping the T and waiting for this possible unicorn GT4RS for track duty as the idea really intrigues me (more so than a GT3 for some reason). I know we have to wait for what it really will be but I'm bored and want to imagine.

If they really go to great lengths with the GT4RS and give it multi-link rear, PDK-S (all 7 or 8 gears used for performance, rather than emissions/consumption regs) and 450hp or more at over 8k rpm, it will be a real weapon on track. I have no doubt about that. Whether you would derive more pleasure from it than your Manual 911T (or a GT3), I can't say. I wouldn't expect to like it as much as my Manual GT3, but I'd certainly be open-minded enough to try it
