This is why i think us 17 inchers should take a spare set of rims down that we can share if such an issue arises?

Not a retread. Looks like the C4 was lowered to a point where the shocks bottomed out too easily and allowed the wheel to hit the arch. That's what cut a groove in it. Lesson here for all of us is to make sure we have clearance under all conditions.

First photo. The view from the lookout on SH16 on the way to Wellsford from Kaukapakapa.
Second photo. We stopped on the Titoki bridge in the Maungakahia valley and I got excited pointing out the lights of the farm house in the distance where I was brought up
Arrived safely at Kaitaia. Highlight was going up the twisty road leading to Kaitaia on SH1 with no traffic and plenty of G forces at play. Brought out three smiles when we stopped at the top.
The three remaining cars have performed floorlessly. Track hardened :-P

We made it. A long drive in the night. Ran over 3 possums, one of which wasn't dead before impact. I think I can see fur on the splitter. Need to check in daylight.
Some sublime roads. Doug took us down some back roads that must win the prize for the most yellow signs in a short space of road. Lots of 45/55 and 65km corners. However the best was 22km south of Kaitaia, a sublime set of uphill twisties, all banked into the turns. Following Doug was like having a dogfight as he would turn in and I would follow.
Cars seem to be in one piece.
Thoughts so far. 5,000km is a looooong way. Comfort is king as is a sorted car. Roads have all kinds of hazards, be prepared for road works, wandering stock, slow drivers. An inflated spare wheel is a good idea, as is breakdown assistance. Personally I'm more conflicted over the track vs road work. It was sad to see PEL go back home, but at least he was close to home and able to drive. I don't fancy breaking down in a far flung place. Preserve the car and enjoy.

The Mungamuka Ranges lead into kaitia. Lotsa seat time in those from a couple of seasons farming up there. Great road if you get lucky with traffic. Whangamonoma has same road twice as long I'm and twice as long out which is a famous targa stage and really rad.
Great to hear you all made it fine . Have you upgraded the 964 to hid ? Cheap kits available wort every penny for night driving.
Let's hope no more road kill. It's one of those things about fast touring I like the least - every long trip ends up with a murder. Last time was a blueberry shake but time before that bird and before that rabbit very messy!
Drive safe tommorow will be a breeze just watch out for buses and Maori on horses or driving stoned!

PEL on his way home. Sat in his car for a small time to help diagnose the problem. Seems very tight for a car of that mileage. Go cars not show cars.
I imagine he'll have a few words with the mechanic to find out why his car is able to hit the tyre so easily.
PEL, you made the right decision. The cornering got harder as we went on.

Cape Reinga, official name Cape Reinga/Te Rerenga Wairua, is the northwesternmost tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. Cape Reinga is more than 100 km north of the nearest small town of Kaitaia.
The 'Te Rerenga Wairua' component of the name in Māori language means the leaping-off place of spirits.
