I could be wrong, but I believe these are all paid positions. I do not know if some are part time though https://www.pca.org/connect/national-office

So who actually appoints the members of the medical committee? Who therefor has the oversight?

Thanks ProCoach. There has to be a formal process in place for appointment. Correct?

My reading of the bylaws is that it is the President or EC. I can't remember for sure. What is interesting is that there is no mention of the medical committee anywhere that I saw. I didn't even know it existed until this thread and I've been involved with PCA since 1998.

Check the bylaws, but I think they are approved by the EC, but I could be wrong. They do serve at the leisure of the president.

Folks interested in the positions step up or are recruited by other members on the committee, is my take.

The people in the national office: Vu (Executive Director), the accounting people, a few IT people that keep the website runnig, social media, all media, etc. I believe Susan Shire and the CR business director. And the Panorama staff.
Basically the administrators of the club. It's not a lot (way more than when I was a Zone Rep), but for as big as PCA is, all but this handful are volunteer (including the entire EC and Board members).

This is correct ~ I would add the Director of Marketing (who I got to know well and is a very hard-working chap). As much as many would like to point fingers at what could be a large operational budget for employees, it really isn't. The Executive Committee, "National Support" personnel, Zone Reps, all of the various Chairpersons, etc. are all unpaid volunteers.

I'll venture a guess that 99.99+% of the club volunteers are working hard and doing an excellent job.
But being an unpaid volunteer doesn't preclude one from lusting after/consolidating/abusing power.
City planning commission comes to mind...

I think that percentage is optimistic, but I do think the majority of volunteers are working hard and doing a good job. The issue is that a few people in positions of power who are doing a bad job can do a LOT of damage. The checks and balances are not strong.

Without a doubt, and I don't think anyone would dispute it. The point is that many of the volunteers who have managed to obtain "senior management" positions are, not surprisingly, keenly interested in maintaining those positions, and perhaps will choose to overlook what would otherwise be considered rational and logical concerns from the "rank-and-file" club members. A "circling of the wagons" strategy if you will...

When a volunteer unabashedly declares themselves "The Sheriff" during a pre event participant meeting where all the leadership are in attendance, lays down their law and makes it clear who they will and won't believe regarding future alleged infractions, you're pretty much clearly informed how things in the club stand.
