Default Isudar Carplay for PCM 3.1

I am opening a new thread because there are differences between the Joyeauto unit and the one I installed which are pretty significant. Here is the link to purchase: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002662816135.html

It arrived in couple of weeks which is pretty normal for all orders from China where I live. The packaging looked pretty banged up but the board, antennas and the cables were separately packed in bubble wrap. Overall, although it looked like someone kicked it few times, everything worked out well and there was zero damage on the unit.

The main benefits are:

1. You don't have to fit another unit box and cables
2. You don't have to use an external microphone at all if you have BT
3. You don't have to do wiring to link to a fuse and get power - it uses the PCM power which is OEM, starts and go off with the car, etc.

Board itself is very well made and components are looking great. Both antennas are the same unlike previous version so you can't link them the wrong way and the ribbon cables are pretty standard.

The rest is pretty straight forward too - you get main unit cable which proxies the original one and you get another one for the USB cable. If your car doesn't have a reverse camera or a microphone that's where you plug the aftermarket ones. Since mine does, all I had to do is just drop the USB cable on the left side for the initial pair.

Removing the unit is super easy, the worst part being getting out the two vents. Don't bother ordering the well overpriced Porsche tools. Here's a link for the same ones which worked flawlessly for me: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000295038705.html

Once the vents are out it's a bit tricky to get out the PCM, what I did was put it on ignition, moved the gearshift lever to Drive, turned off the car, took out the unit and let it dangle on cables, put the lever to Park and got the key out. Locked the car, waited for 10-20 seconds for everything to go out and unplugged the unit.

Installing the board is easy, took me around 15-20 minutes. There are two bolts at the top and three on the back to be removed:

On the side, you need to cut the white duct tape (voiding warranty)

Then two more bolts on the bottom which are shorter so keep em in a separate tray:

Once that is done, carefully pull out the front face of the unit, there are two clips on the sides and it comes out. Be gentle and carefully disconnect the ribbon cable from the display.

Next, push the DVD forward and once you remove another ribbon cable, you will get access to the main unit:

The best way to handle the installation is to move out of the opening the original cables without disconnecting them.

Then install the new board with the spacers provided and link them to the proper locations. You can't do it wrong, one is wider and one is shorter and they face separate directions. Make sure you push the ribbon cable all the way down and lock it with the plastic lock. Then, add the new ribbon cables from the package and get them out of the front of the unit where the original ones used to be.

There is a plastic cap on the back that you should remove and put through it the two cables. I tied them with cable ties to make sure they don't move around. There's a tiny hole just perfect for the antennas. Be gentle with the antennas, they are mini coax cables and they must be put at a straight angle and click. That's important since you may get interference if not plugged right.

Next, add the DVD cable in its original place - there's space, helping pair of hands would be really useful though.

Next, Install the display - again, click the two ribbon cables and gently put it in place without crushing any cables.

Everything looks bigger on the Internet. The unit is actually smaller and sometimes you need to just be careful and patient. Here's the end result - super clean installation with just couple of cables and 2 antennas dangling out:

You need to unclip the optic cable from the original cable set and put it in the one from the carplay unit. Rather than that, everything is plug and play. Connect everything, and make sure you link your phone before you put the car together

This Carplay implementation works in my opinion faster and snappier than the Joyeauto. I replaced my PCM disc with an SSD which helps too but it works like an OEM unit. In my neighbour's Cayenne we installed Joyeauto one (or pretty much every other box Carplay - they are all the same just rebranded) and you can feel lag here and there. With that one it's super snappier the only downside being the hard slide function which is actually due to the old PCM display.

Great documentation. I have the NM Automotive unit in my 991.1 TTS and am pretty happy with it. I planned on installing the NM Automotive unit in my 970.2 PTT as well, but was not aware of this option. Do you have any experience with the NM unit? If so, any observations or comparisons?

Nice write up. I'm convinced, kit is on its way to me. I see you removed all the trim on each side of the vents; was that necessary? Did you remove the trim after the removing the vents?

Thanks. Great write up and excellent info.

While I would like to add this, and do SSD upgrade at the same time. My 2014 S Hybrid is still under CPO warranty. Thinking I should wait???

If you open the unit to put carplay in you're voiding warranty anyway so I wouldn't really wait.

If your in CarPlay, and you have a factory back up camera, will the camera automatically come up?

Thanks

Yes, the Isudar is much better than Joye and alll the other boxes:

- no external mic, it works with the factory one
- no external box to fit
- no wiring to reach the fuse box
- faster boot

as I said I will make a video today…

Thanks, it sounds to good to be true. I had a feeling something like this would come out, that's why I held off buying the others.

That’s really slick . I’m not very good at installs like these though , I’d be worried about breaking something important. Might see if a local guy can install this, looks like an awesome upgrade.

I am not affiliated in any way with them, just saying I installed the Joyeauto on my buddy's car and Isudar one came out a week later, feeling kinda wrong about that because it's really that much better...

Looks very promising. Any idea why the product ships with a microphone if it's not needed? I've seen other videos explain that the microphone is necessary for "Siri" and "Hej Google" initiialization, which I always found a bit hard to believe....
