Dual clutch is the only transmission available with the C8. Z51 doesn't include supercharging. Supercharging may have to wait for the Z06 edition.

992 will be more luxurious and comfortable. the weight will be close as will the performance stats. no longer should 911 have dct and traction advantage now that c8 has same trans and is mid engine. if 992 ever offers stick that will be biggest driving advantage for the few who want that.

biggest difference will be as status symbol. everyone knows a 911 is expensive and exclusive. otoh, most people will mistake c8 for Italian exotic.

That said, it's a supercar bargain and will undoubtedly be a commercial success. Glad GM is offering such a product.

Agree, I owned a ZR1 and it was awesome. Actually thinking of getting one: 2013 with low miles.

3rd gear failures, headlight delam, door panel warp, carpet shrinkage, windshield goo, they all have their issues. I view cars as a keep 'em a few years and dump 'em situation so a few reliability/workmanship issues don't scare me away. This car looks enticing and my local guy says I could get one of the first ones he sees at MSRP. Hmm

and when I say similar performance stats, that means top of the line 992s with all the extras for $$$ in comparison to $ c8

He conveniently didn't even mention the 718 Cayman/Boxster when listing other mid-engine cars. I guess they are too inexpensive if you're trying to compare the new Corvette to the $200K exoticars.

Yes I caught that too. It's especially curious since the Boxster has been around for over 20 years. It could be that he was focused on high HP/torque cars, and he doesn't consider the 718 to be in that category, despite the 414 HP of the GT4.

It is basically all aluminium and fiberglass (or whatever Chevy calls it now). Lotus builds 2000lbs cars with the same materials. If Chevy got rid of the fat and accommodations for fat people, they could get it down to 3200.

The castings for the subframes are huge though and presumably heavy, and while the center tunnel design is clever, it would have been better to connect the windscreen to the roof and use deeper sills.

I am not sure why anyone would get the base corvette. Wait for the Z06 or ZR1 which should be legitimately fast.

Overall a mixed bag. Unfortunately I expect the Z06 variant to be even heavier which is unfortunate.
Weight is the same as a 992. But I agree, the rear is terrible.

I have no reason to believe that the product GM sells for say 80 grand with performance that matches or is better than the product the competition sells for at least 120% of the price wil have equal quality fit and finish. As the owner of a 987.1 I cant hear the Porsche nutswingers touting all of the facts that support the superior engineering of a Porsche motor over Chevy's primitive pushrod V8 because all I can hear is the ticking time bomb Porsche calls a motor just behind my head. And, as an aside the interior of my 04 GTO was of superior quality to the interior of my 987.1. What rocket scientist decided to put cheap gray paint that chips if you breathe on it over the black plastic? Radio and HVAC buttons - Now that's fit and finish.

Lets look in the mirror before we bash the competition, and celebrate the fact the GM just raised the bar for everyone. May kill the resale value of our mid engined marvels, but definitely raised the bar. One small step for GM, one giant leap for the industry.

Cheers

Will be interesting for sure, once the Z06 and ZR1 model info comes out it, it might be tempting to make the plunge. I would not replace either the 6tt or 7tt with one but in addition it would be an awesome car. Add some boost and could have something like the GTTT's for some mega land speed records.

Interior is a little lacking, but for the price not bad if cross shopping a 4C/718/Evora, color matched blades and the larger spoiler it has a very 430 Challenge look to it.
