GT4 G81 Transmission Failure
#482
Even if it makes it to market and turns out to be reliable, I wouldn't say it makes a gear swap moot. I'd prefer not to shorten 1st and 6th, for example. 2nd gear being on the mainshaft has really created a rock vs hard place situation here....

I guess its just a matter of time for mine to go out, April build. 10k miles 5 track days, with 4 more track days to come in the next two months and the smokies GT event in april. i was planning on putting headers, now ill just wait until my transmission its replace, my dealer doesn't like mods.

My understanding is that the new boxes are indeed of different design, and also have a new part number.

So I guess now it's a good time as ever for paranoia and hysteria to really set in
If it happens to me, I'll just drive the car without 3rd gear while I wait for the replacement transmission to come in, thoughts?

There is no guarantee the problem couldn't escalate with extended driving. I wouldn't want to further damage my transmission or more importantly find myself in an accident due to a locked up transmission.

Probably depends on track, but currently I spend very little time in 5th at CotA, so I doubt any remotely reasonable reduction would have me maxing it out. It's not the highway mileage I'm concerned about, more the drone. At an 80 MPH cruise the GT4 is still juuust within reason for having a conversation with a passenger or listening to music. True I don't do a lot of road trips, but again I'm talking ideal world here. Yes, if I had to choose between modding 3-5 or ring and pinion, all else being equal I'd probably value the improvement in 2nd over the undesired change to 6th and 1st. But on the other hand, GTGears' gears have proven themselves over many years, whereas this ring and pinion setup is still in development, and according to several people here who would know, neither gear nor R&P swaps are jobs that even the typical race shop should be tackling, so except for the few lucky enough to live near a specialty shop, there would be a lot of extra hassle and cost associated with going down a path that didn't turn out well.

All I know is that I haven't seen a single failure in 2015 production cars. Fortunately my car is a 2015 production. There has to be some sort of explanation for this. I think it's extremely unfortunate if they've decided to cheap out on a certain component after a certain date. Ironically, with new " unproven " platforms,it's usually the other way around : early production cars start failing, they find out about it and change things for the better. Not the case here it seems...

Porsche has a cruel sense of irony, the highlight of the 991 GT3 was the engine... it proceeds to regularly blow up, the highlight of the GT4 is the manual gear box... it will fail. What is next? Mission E that will electrocute?
