When the transfer case starts to go, do you also get vibration in front at full steering lock. I have noticed pretty strong vibration at full lock.

this is not the acorn affect, ie not tire skip but vibration.

I definitely have hesitation and worse when warm as others have stated.

All has been well up until recently, but my symptoms feel a bit different than what is typically described here. I only notice issues when putting the car into Drive. In the first few seconds it feels like there is some periodic hesitation and "clunkiness" as the car sorts itself out. After that, zero issues/grinding/slippage. Under normal cirumstances I'd suspect the tranny, but these gearboxes have proven to be pretty bullet proof, whereas the TCs have not. Curious if anyone else has seen accounts of similar behavior?

My next steps are to disconnect the TC and see where that gets me.
2014 with 85k, base v6 cayenne, original TC. i have same issue - only on initial drive and first time going into "D". a slight clunk and hesitation, then no issues at all for remainder of drive. the next day, starts over again.

I went to accelerate from a stop light (with the wheel straight) and experienced pretty significant shuddering a few weeks ago. Decided to take the care into the dealership, where it spent a week and they weren't able to replicate any TC issues. Seems to be how intermittent problems typically work.

Re-Subscribing to this thread...
.... (it's been a long time since I've been in here,... I was post #3 on this thread ... back during my FIRST TC replacement at 49k miles)

... now having symptoms again,... so looks like I will be on my SECOND TC replacement ... at 71k miles.

The 10 yr warranty extension on my 2012 CTT is good till next June 2022, so hopefully this will be another freebie.

We've loved this SUV for 6 yrs & 60k miles (we bought it used),... but now wondering if in another 20k - 25k miles, when the 10 yr extension is done,... whether it will make sense to "fund" the TC replacement myself.

How many TC fluid changes were done in those 32k miles since your first TC change?

My CS had the TC changed out (under previous ownership) at 22k miles. When I purchased it at 54k miles it had some initial TC case symptoms (slight shudder at start of acceleration, etc). I changed fluid on it at 57k (symptoms disappeared immediately) then again at 60k just for good measure. After that, I just changed TC fluid at each oil change - transfer case still going fine without any symptoms at 81k now.

Summary (for me, at least) - changing TC fluid often seems to help resolve symptoms and lengthen life of the TC. If you haven't been changing it often, get the TC replaced under warranty and start doing so. ;-)

Update:

Just got it back & Porsche replaced the TC (again). Per my post #1219 above, my first replacement was at 49k miles in April 2017. This second one now (3rd in the vehicle) is at 72k miles (4 yrs later).

Since my Porsche dealership is so excellent, and they have been taking full accountability during these past 4 yrs, I have not paid for any TC oil changes, nor have they recommend any. Believe me I get it. I do a lot of DIY myself on all my vehicles (just finished a full bottom up engine rebuild on one of my cars & currently installing), but for this DD SUV, I have left it in their hands. That approach will probably change once my 10 yr extended warranty expires next year. I may decide to start doing the oil changes, to hedge my bets & hopefully will not have to replace the TC again in 2025. ..... unless Porsche decides to give us another extension.... which I would love to see. This 958 Turbo w/ GTS package is an unbelievable vehicle. I would love to keep it long term.

I think the TC extended warranty on 2015-18 is 7 years.

Exactly same year with almost identical miles...same symptoms. I'm not completely sure that it's the TC, rather cold tranny and CV joints along with cold motor. 200 yards later, it's perfect. I HAVE changed the fluid once and I will be again. Too cheap and stupid easy not to.

Well I finally got my car to the dealer to check the TC literally on the last day of my 10 year warranty. I have been getting a few mild symptoms but unfortunately when I bought the car only 6 months ago I got a major service done before driving it including trans and TC fluid. Upshot is Porsche we’re not able to confirm a TC fault. The car behaved and their main test was to come to a stop on a steep hill and accelerate slowly in a straight line. I knew that wouldn’t be an issue. They kept the ‘file’ open for 3 days in case I could replicate any binding. I couldn’t. The main thing that bothers me is a clacking sound that appears to be coming from the TC region, most audible when decelerating and downshifting. I read somewhere it is the chain hitting the case/guides but that could be a furphy.

Just bought a new-to-me 2015 CD with 95,000 km. I experienced some lurching and hard shifts, as well as vibration on sharp turning. After using Ravenol oil-finder I bought a bottle 75W-90. The fluid was black and definitely due for a change.

It drives smoother already and am loving the car even more now

Hi DrFred. Just so I understand this correctly, you used Ravenol 75W-90 Gear Oil instead of Ravenol DTF1 Transfer Fluid?

Hello there! Yes, that’s correct. The diesel V6, having a Torsen TC (PL72T), does not require DTF-1, according to Ravenol.
