The transmission (not transfer case) prefers to be filled on the high side versus low side. If you have a cold transmission and you are slightly underfilled, then it is fairly common to have the jerkiness you are describing. I recommend you top off the transmission fluid (you might only need half a liter), filling it at the 35 degree temp set point.

Also, the software version 1150 on the control unit indicates you have the newer reinforced transfer box that has not been shown to have the same issues as the prior versions.

r553 - yes i did the transfer case fluid change 3 months ago ...no change - garrett376 - hmmm..that makes me think - i changed the transmission fluid and filter about 6 months ago - i tried to put back in exactly what i took out and it was dripping out the fill when i sealed it up - old school used to be you NEVER overfilled an auto transmission or it would develop leaks, so i do tend to go on the less is better side - i'll try adding a half liter and report back here

It's not that you are overfilling it; it's that people tend to underfill these boxes and get hesitations that are remedied with proper filling. A drip at 45 degrees is underfilled; a stream at 35 degrees is what you should shoot for.

I have a 958.2 Turbo with 36,000 miles and has had two TC replaced. What is annoying to me is the response delay when you step on the gas hard and the car finally decides to move. I have tried other ZF’s 8 speeds on other SUV’s and for some reason the one on mine feels ancient technology compared to newer cars. Might be just programming, or is the TC design as well?

958.2 still uses the Aisin 8-speed gearbox. Only the newest 2018 onward uses ZF8hp

Thanks for the clarification, I don’t know why I thought it was ZF. That explains a lot.

create a profile on Porsche website. Add your car to it. Submit a request via website describing your situation. Be specific about referencing extended warranty on the TC and asking to open a case for "goodwill repair".
right now everybody is on holiday and whoever is manning the phones are not the right people.

Default 2017 CS w/ 48k miles, bad transfer case

Hey guys, I saw you were trying to keep a list of diagnosed transfer case issues. I just had a 2017 CS w/ 48k miles diagnosed with bad transfer case. I have scheduled to take in for the repair in a couple of weeks and I feel like it's getting worse by the day.

Not sure what the correct vocabulary is to describe it. I would describe it as a pulsating acceleration in second and third gear. It just doesn't accelerate smoothly and I could feel a repetitive slipping that if didn't know was the transfer case would think is in the transmission.

Another thing I could see and hear is that second and third gear almost engage in two steps - on upshifts to second and third, the engine rpms first drop a to about half way to where they should be when fully engaged, hover there for a second or two, and then fully drop down to where the gear is fully engaged.

And importantly, all of these symptoms only start to appear after the transfer case has a chance to get close to full operating temperature. So if it's cold outside, you may need to drive around for 15 - 20 minutes before you start to feel it.

This is the normal transmission shifting behavior.

Thanks for letting me know, I've only had the car for two weeks so I wasn't sure if that was also related to the problem or not.

This sounds like transfer case to me. I remember the same sensation and thought mine was misfiring. Took it to Porsche and it was the transfer case.

They might goodwill that repair as it is a known issue especially if it has been done once already on your Cayenne.
