Diesel Cayenne and VW emission issue
#61
I love my Cayenne diesel! I trade cars often and this is the first car I hope to keep a long while. I even got the pre-paid maintenance and extended warranty. My other main car is a '15 911 Turbo and I drive the CD most of the time. I love the mileage, torque, distance per tank, etc.
Talking to my local tech- he thinks the adblue engines will be ok. Probably a reflash, maybe a little less performance and mileage but not much difference. Will probably use more adblue. And there will be aftermarket companies to refresh back. Hurt resale- yep, no doubt. Maybe a voucher to make up for diminished value. Who knows. I'm still hoping I can keep it with the same performance and mileage.

I have a 2016 on order due in this Dec and asked my dealer as it seems now this has grown to Audi also and about 11 million vehicles if European ones are included. BMW noted the X3 was found to be above the levels too but the X5 was okay. My dealer's response was that the Cayenne Diesel was not effected and had a different ECU and engine. Hope that holds..and my delivery isn't delayed or the Cayenne affected.

I just backed out of a planned purchase of a 15' CPO Cayenne Diesel. I believe that the overzealous EPA will now hyper-scrutinize ALL VW diesels (including the recently announced investigation into 3.0 liter units) and the unfortunate consequences will be damaged reputation and resale values for anything associated with Diesel and the VW group of brands. I have read the letters to the dealers from VW, about Porsche not being affected but my experience with dealing with the Feds is that they are relentless and are now going to impose new "over the road" emissions tests.....and my guess is that no one comes out of this unscathed.
-My wife and I are huge Porsche Brand supporters and felt that this would be the perfect vehicle for us (and still is) and are greatly disappointed. Not sure where to go for our next SUV (needed to tow my 991 to track days!)

I don't think we'll have any more to worry about than every other car that "legitimately" does worse in the real world. The big reason for the hack was so they could skip the AdBlue, and we have that already.
There is likely to be a short term hit in resale value, but it will go back up in a few years after this mostly blows over. I fear it's the end of any chance diesels had to go mainstream in the U.S., but the real diesel lovers will still be there and as new options start to dwindle the used market will creep up again.
If you can wait I'd say hold off for another month or too and you are likely to get a better deal from the nervous nellies and if your plan is to hold onto it for 4+ years (and diesel is the wrong short term option anyway) then you should be good.

The power delivery / transmission is much more refined than the vw model used in a cayenne....they also isolated the engine better from the chassis and the at idle vibration is not there....worst part of a cayenne diesel
Give them a try...I liked them so much I bought two

Regarding idle vibration, I am on my second diesel cayenne and do not notice any vibration. When knowledgeable car friends see my car when I am in it, they don't know it is an oil burner until they see the label.

Nobody even thinks about the BP disaster in the gulf anymore. I'm not sure this will have long term impact on our cultural memory for diesel. It could blow over. At the end of the day diesels make an excellent motivator for heavy vehicles.
