I bought a pcar from pcar auction last year that did not meet the reserve and the owner basically calls the high bidders and the seller to close a deal. I ended up buying it for 5k less than the reserve which was pcars buyer fee.

Its possible the reserve was not met and pcarauctions talked them into accepting the high bid...

Do I pay sales tax on a used car from a private party in Arizona?
A. No. Casual sales between private parties are not taxable. When you register your vehicle at MVD, bring a copy of the bill of sale or any documentation that shows you purchased the vehicle from a private party.

Amazing, eh?
Yep. In AZ a used car from a dealer = tax. A used car from a private party = no tax.

There is a big catch there. While it's true that you don't pay sales tax on private party car purchases, you pay an outrageous ANNUAL registration fee which is equal to $2.89 per $100 of assessed value. The assessed value is 60% of MSRP. That means the annual registration fee (or as AZ calls it, Vehicle License Tax) on a $200k MSRP car is $3,468. The fee is reduced by 16.25% every year that the car has been registered in AZ. If you're buying a car that has been registered in AZ for a couple years, the fees dwindle down to almost nothing. But If the car has not been registered in AZ previously, you're starting from the new car assessed value and within 3 years, your total registration fees paid are probably greater than if you just paid sales tax on the purchase, like you do in most other states.

RE: the AZ no tax on private party sales...it's still a nice benefit, as there are city/states that charge tax on private party sales AND add registration taxes/fees based on the value of the vehicles, e.g. VLT (as stated above in AZ), in Seattle it's RTA, and I believe there is something similar in CA. I recall when I moved from PHX to HOU the registration fee on a 911 turbo went from ~1,500 to ~100 lol. Obviously, there are always tradeoffs

I suspect the average 997.2 GT3RS sold in private party transactions would be written up at $75k

Yeah, $100 for state inspection + annual registration. Stark contrast to when I lived in CA. But as you said, everything is a tradeoff. Property taxes here just about negate any 'savings'. TX still>>>>>CA

It's not based on sales price. It's based on MSRP of car when new.

WP0AC29967S792579

for sale at eurocar Costs Mesa. 18,xxx miles $189k asking.
both rear quarter panels repainted with overspray in door jambs. Rear wheels have curb rash repair, with paint that doesn’t match.

Rear decklid looks repainted as well, and I suspect the hood as well.

So many newbies gonna get smoked on buying these cars as "investments" - news flash we all tracked the crap out of them

For sale listing sure makes it look good. For sale EDIT: There is a bit of wear. Minor accident on Carfax from 2/21

2007 GT3RS is what he is referring to Vinanalytics

Thanks for reporting your observations

if your investment portfolio includes questionable 12 year old cars… or any cars for that matter “hopefully” you can afford the risk lol

this 30k mile RS I bought w/out PPI has had a few demons… but nothing that can’t be fixed. I found a cracked header yesterday, it made me feel very justified in my Dundon purchase

what’s interesting is that the things I have found like the header or shredded numeric bearing the post purchase PPI never noted… they literally had “cabin filter” and “windshield wiper blades” and TPMS was “past recommended age”

I think if i wasn’t time constrained with an auction I’d just fly to the car… sometimes a repainted panel etc really doesn’t matter once you see it

Thanks for the eyes on info!!...no way to discern that from afar with those glossy dark lit pics. The only thing I could glean is that someone needs to take a toothbrush to the shifter shift pattern as it looks grimy!

This market has provided an avenue for a lot of beaters to exchange hands with flaws never truly disclosed or questioned. Someone should write a book about it and call it "stories"
