Either they feel the EPS technology has improved (not evidenced in any BMW cars) or the demands for fuel economy (and being able to steer with the start/stop feature) became too compelling.

Yeah, BMW has used EPS on its non-M cars for quite some time (and never on an M car), so it was a shock to many fans when they said all newly developed M cars from next year will have EPS also.

Andreas, I have heard 3.8 as well. Do you know the displacement limitations of the 9A1?
I believe that the newest M cars have conventional hydraulic steering (M5, M6), whereas the rest of the range and the upcoming M cars have/will have EPAS. Despite not having EPAS, the M5 and M6 have received criticism concerning their steering feel, or lack thereof.

I drove an E92 M3 in February. I thought the steering was ok for what the car is - a sporty GT car that is very affordable now on the used market. I almost bought one, but then I drove my 993... I haven't driven a current BMW other than that car, however.

I think part of the problem is that the damn steering wheel on the M cars is too thick

Agree, you always hear people (forums, magazines) talking about thick steering wheels on performance cars as if it's a desirable trait and a thinner wheel is just hopelessly out of date. I like that Porsches don't have a fat steering wheel as standard. In fact, the standard 997 wheel is smaller than the 993 four spoke wheel.

More pics and discussion of the above; also an internet brands site, so it should be fine to link I think.

Damn, this is a photo shoot for the first press release, brochures etc. So these are the final product, too bad it's mostly still covered up!
