I got an UOA back on the 2009 Cayman S. "Higher than normal" Au and Fe values, but still not smeared piston skirt high.

I have no idea what was in that customers car previously. Its now filled with 5W40 Motul 8100 X-Cess.

I assume the aluminum and silicon are from the block, and the iron is the piston skirt coating.

The Boron number is not bad but the Moly values should be much higher than that. Whatever oil was used before was not sufficient enough.

The sample looked like a typical A40 oil with exception of the moly which looks to be a bit higher than what I would have expected.

As an update:

The 2009 Cayman S was black flagged at a DE event for excessive smoke (it has a new AOS). Once it was back at the shop I drained the oil- and it was pitch black and full of sparkles- in less than 1k miles. Refilled the oil, and drove it 10 miles, and drained again, still pitch black, still with sparkles. Scores went from mild to worse. It's finished.

Sorry to read that but thanks for passing on the info. Since it's a 9A1 I'm curious if the scoring is on one side of the cylinder (the thrust side only like the M96/M97 engine bore scoring) or if it's on both sides. Please post some photos when you get a chance showing both sides.

There's only a small number of 9A1 scoring cases that I've seen documented and they looked like the piston siezed (scored on both sides). The failure signature is different from the earlier engine bore scoring. Interesting to see which kind this was.

Please do an LN Engineering DIY rebuild and document the process for us in a new thread! It will be a Rennlist first on a 9A1.

Sorry to hear that. If I can ask, how many miles? How often tracked?

You’ll likely find the issue on cylinder 1 most prominent.. If so, I know why. I’d start scoping on that cylinder first..

On a 9A1, #1 is first. In what order would the rest be checked? Just curious, I take my 997.2 in for a final inspection and have cylinder 1 scoped while it is still under it's CPO for a month or so. Are there any other cylinders that are likely to fail as prominently as #1? If so then I want those scoped as well.

Any advice?

Thanks, respectfully.

Start at number 1.. Just pull that coil pack and plug, and see what you find. If you don’t find scoring, go ahead and keep doing the rest of the cylinders. If number 1 isn’t scored it’s a crapshoot which other cylinder might be if you have symptoms..

Ok, thank you. I don't have any symptoms. 20k miles, no oil usage. Just being cautious before this car is out of warranty.

They aren’t going to fix anything without any symptoms. Don’t waste your time lol.

Why wouldn't I want it checked and or documented while its still under warranty? Car has been exclusively serviced by Porsche dealers its entire life. I have no reason to belive the bores are scored but if it costs me a couple hundred bucks for a P dealer to check and document anything, may get me some goodwill down the road. It's still going in for an oil change, inspection, and an issue with the transmission shifting into 1st gear. I've spent that much for the borescope on dumber things for this car.

A Porsche dealer will do this:

Nothing
