Assume you didn't feel comfortable sharing the VIN or dealer name, but can you tell us what part of the country or state the car was in? Maybe describe the vehicle? Color, trim, mileage?

thanks!

Pacific Northwest Black C4S around 60K miles.
Car no longer for sale there-they may have put back into the auction...

Sorry to hear that. That's not the way you want to start your Porsche ownership experience. Hopefully you'll be back on the road soon with many years of enjoyment ahead! I feel that these cars are otherwise very reliable, so you should be in good shape once you get it back.

Just curious, but what region of the country did you buy the car in or do you know where the car spent most of its time? Also, who is doing your rebuild, if you don't mind sharing?

Car spent most of its life in the Carolinas ( Car was a trade in at Lexus of Greenville,SC.) Several people wanted the car so I had to move fast! I did not have the car scoped! Sister dealers Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover next door. Motor and car are at Black Forest Racing in Denver, NC. They have a long history of racing air cooled and water cooled Porsches. Google them to read about them.

Don't the dealers have at least 30 day power train warranty on pre owned? When i was looking at a preowned 991 from an MB dealer, that was what i was told here in NJ. Might want to inquire...

Thanks for the info, and again, sorry to hear this. Bore scoring isn't exclusive to cold weather climates, but it does seem to be a contributing factor on some cars, which is why I asked. There is still debate on how much a bore scope reveals when scoping from the top of the cylinder vs. dropping the sump, so don't kick yourself too hard for not getting the bores scoped before buying the car.

I'm also curious how you found out it had bore scoring. Did you have the bores scoped after you purchased the car, or did you experience some of the bore scoring symptoms (sooty driver's side exhaust tips, high oil consumption, knocking/clicking sound at idle, large amount of smoke at start-up, etc.)?

I would look into this as well. As we all know, bore scoring doesn't happen overnight. You might be out of luck since you've already pursued an engine rebuild. I suspect the dealer would have just taken the car back from you and sent it to auction. How long has it been since you purchased the car?

Bore scoring was brought to lite when the engine was taken apart. Bought the car in Feb 2020. No smoke, oil use, or storage noise. Also South Carolina doesn't have a 30 day warranty....I tried to get the dealer to give me one year power train warranty and they said no!

Why did you take the engine apart?

I took the car in to have the IMS bearing replaced because I did not have confirmation of the last time it was replaced. During inspection the mechanic discovered that the IMS shaft was damaged. That's when I decided to have the shaft replaced which requires the engine to be opened. That's when we noticed the bore scoring problem.

Sorry msn. Horrible introduction to brand. Do you know what IMS bearing you had and your build date? There are a lot of the early .1s out there mostly asymptomatic with scoring.

Build date 2-2005, Looks like the bearing had been replaced once with a roller type bearing that was used/sold by Vertex in Miami,Fla. Don't hold me to that but that's what I have been told byFlat 6 Inovations. PS-I love the car and Looks like I will have a brand new engine when complete! Then all this will be behind me! Fingers crossed!

Hi Charles - just had an oil change and the engine serial number is - M97-0168602649. Please let me know what you are able to find. Thanks!
