My understanding was that 997.1 scoring occurred in bank 2 with cylinders 5 & 6 being more common.

@soin was your right tailpipe/bumper the sooty one?

indeed would seem to be most common, as you view the rear of the car my passenger side was the sooty side with cylinders 1 and 3 being scored, the car was rebuilt 2 yrs ago by the previous owner using crappy cheap steel liners.
For the pleasure of selling it to me the dealership now have a duty to rebuild it, this time I'm insisting on a Hartech bottom end

Did consider pushing for a refund refund but we got into this car for a really good price and the trade in value on our previous car was 5k more than we paid for it 2 yrs ago, the 997 is also loaded spec wise and and my favourite colour combo of GT silver/ cocoa.

At this point I don't think I'd feel comfortable with any 997.1 car unless it had been re sleeved by one of the top players so I actually feel this could be a blessing in disguise and shouldn't cost me a dime

What caused the steel sleeves to fail? Did one slip?

Chalk up one more scored bore 997.1. Bought my C2S three years and 30,000 miles ago. Burned 1 quart of oil per 1500 miles since I’ve had it. No soot. No white smoke at start up. Last year at around 89,000 miles noticed increased oil consumption; 1 quart per 600 miles. Interestingly enough this started right after I had a big service (clutch/flywheel, oil change, engine mounts, spark plugs, ignition coils). Passenger side soot and white smoke on startup started then too. Couple months ago CEL turned on. Cylinder 3 misfire. Took to local shop. Deep scoring in cylinder 3. Fouled spark plug. They didn’t scope the other cylinders. Looking at rebuild options now. Took part in Flat6’s webinar last week. Super impressed with them. Still driving the car. Runs perfectly.

Oh man, not a great first post on Rennlist. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Can you tell us anything more about your service regimen? How often were you changing the oil and with what brand/viscosity oil? Also, do you live in a cold climate? Do you drive it during the Winter months?

A Flat Six Innovations rebuild would be awesome. I just don't know if I could wait a year and a half (current wait list from what I understand, but Jake or Jud could confirm) for one.

I would caution you against driving it too much with confirmed bore scoring, especially since it is symptomatic now (sooty exhaust pipe, smoking on startup, increased oil consumption, etc.). That could potentially cost you more in the long-run, and it's not a cheap rebuild to begin with.

Please keep us posted. I hope it turns out well for you!

Where are you located? Year round driver? It started suddenly or gradual- when I read you post I get the vibe as soon as you got the car back form a big service it began?

Any tapping noise?

I had been changing the oil every 6000 miles. First 2 years I was using Mobil 1 0W40. Last year switched to Motul 5W40. I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi so not particularly cold. We have about a months worth of nights where it gets into the 30s. Rarely ever goes below 30. I drive it year round. It is my daily driver. Average 10k miles/year.

Yes. A flat six build would be amazing. Currently I'm in line for an early 2022 completion date. Trying to work out the logistics to ensure that's doable for me.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on driving it minimally starting in a couple weeks. Making arrangements to have an alternate car to use. Currently still driving it. It has been fairly consistent at 1 quart per 600 miles for a few months now.

Please keep us posted. I hope it turns out well for you!
Will do.

Gulf coast of Mississippi. It is my year round daily driver. I feel like it happened suddenly. I was consistently adding one quart of oil every 1500 miles prior to that big service (which included an oil change). After that service it went 2400 miles before needing a quart which was significntly more than usual. The next top up after that was at 600 miles and it has been that way ever since.

Not sure on the tapping noise. I never noticed any change in the way the engine sounded.

Recently bought a Porsche Carrera 4 997.1 3.6L , 120k km
Although it was a shiny day today, the sky closed upon me, and the clouds gathered...
Yesterday I had the car in service for some suspension related work. No oil consumption, no smoke / soothed pipes, no ticking sounds. Following this forum as well as watching some YT videos, I thought to myself: let me do a bore scope for the peace of mind; in no time I dropped the service an e-mail asking while the car is in service to check the cylinders.

Bummer big big bummer
cyl #6: scored
cyl #5: scored
cyl #4: ok

today it was a sad day. :sigh:

Previous owner had no idea about it. Although the car pulls fine, the engine runs smoothly, no other symptoms I am going to rebuild it (I have to unfortunately)... Sometimes I ask myself whether the problem isn't like that for tens of thousands of kilometers and it's just that we don't know about it, and there are tens of thousands of kilometers left Sometimes I ask myself what if it cracked in the middle of a trip...

Ouch that's pretty bad- no symptoms though?
