Yes, its light...but it's happening.

Not trying to stir any pots here, just providing some pictures. This is the statistically least likely engine to have scoring according to many. This chap can keep this alive for a very long time by changing some habits.

This is the 2.9L DFI engine, correct?

Curious, is this one of your customer's cars or a car you were doing a PPI on?

Correct on the engine.

In for service, spark plugs due, so I took the chance to have a peek. I think the takeaway here is this just happens. The reasons why can be discussed for an eternity. The way MOST people use these cars scoring of some kind seems inevitable (short trip, low total yearly mileage, long periods of sitting, injector leak down etc).

To follow up....I had my '05 911 engine rebuilt by Black Forest Racing, Denver, North Carolina. I had sever scoring on number 6 cylinder. Block was sent to

Millennium Technologies for Nickel Silicon treatment. Company states that it is 10 times as hard as stock. I am currently driving the car which is running fantastic! Any comments about Millennium Tech services?

Very high praise for Millennium Technologies: great work, helpful on tech questions and happy to actually talk to you

Yep, I called them several times with questions and very friendly. They have been extremely busy during the COVID 19 shut down. They have a great webpage with photos, etc.

Default 2009 Cayman S

2009 Cayman S, 54k miles, PDK, life long TX car until quite recently relocated to CO. 60+ year old male who knows how to use the car and who follows a good maint schedule.

Pics at 6 o'clock. 12 o'clock pics will have to wait for tomorrow, but the scoring is nominally worse at that location. Admittedly very light at this point, but the ball is rolling, and the idea 9A1's dont do this is absurd.

If you happen to know, was the Cayman showing any other signs, i.e., excess oil consumption, any Used Oil Analysis's metal wear levels? Like you said, could be much ado about nothing for awhile, at least with proper maintenance etc

When looking at the surface finish of these cylinders (looking beyond the scoring) I see a characteristic of surface finish that we have been seeing for 10 years with scored 9a1 bores.
Measuring those surfaces with my profilometer would likely give a result that I'd expect.

All these bores are at Stage 1 scoring, and cylinders 1/3 are clearly at Stage 2 scoring. You can keep it alive longer with good oil, short service intervals, and clean fuel.

No oil consumption noted by the client. We are sending out this oil change sample today, and will report back with the findings in a few weeks. Changing habits, as Jake suggested, will buy this engine lots of time.

2005 3.6 997
135k miles
Original IMS felt like new
cylinders 4,5,6 all scored badly pistons guarded rings stuck in melted ring lands.
Symptoms we’re misfire cylinder #6 code
20% leak down rate
cylinders 1.2.3 all had no bore scoring and very little visible wear.

can just can’t be getting enough oil to the top of the bore.

Tip side of piston #6 see the big gauge ouch the piston look way worse then the cylinders.

Top side of piston #5

I bet a lot of sports car engines 10 plus year old from all manufacturers look like this if anyone was paranoid enough to look.

Now Bantemben has a complete mess and no mfg motor should look like that.

This is typical of light pick up marks on boxer engines particularly when driven infrequently, this must not be confused with the scoring occurring on M96/7 engines, you will always get a few stories or issues with any mass produced engine but this is not caused by a fundamentally flawed stressed badly designed engine.IMHO (Essex Porsche Inspections)

Yep, conditioning is bad around here. Assuming you are speaking about 2009 Cayman DFI. Travesty is people getting asymptomatic engines looking like this rebuilt due to conditioning around here leading one to think they have a problem.
