Bavarian: have you had the car since new and if so how did you maintain it with respect to oil changes, warm ups at less than 4k rpm, many cold starts, hammering for prolonged periods on the Autobahn....

"Not trying to be the bearer of bad news here but my neighbor has been looking at 997.1’s for 2 years now since I got mine and I have him educated. Every single one he has had scoped has had bore scoring. One didn’t even get scoped cause when they dropped the pan there was so much metal in the pan ..."

He must've spent thousands / a lot of coin on all those PPIs if we are making those generalizations. That said though, wouldn't be surprised.

he has spent some money. But hey, he’s hasn’t bought a car with scored cylinders yet.

I have been driving my Carrera S for 10k miles now and all maintenance has been done exactly as specified, even by the previous owners. The car sees city traffic as well as Autobahn with speeds over 100 mph and is driven in summer and winter (when it is dry) but always with care.
It would be interesting to endoscope 100 997.1 and see how many of them have scratches in the cylinders. Probably almost all of them have some, more or less. Some of them may get symptoms of bore scoring some of them may not...

Bavarian997 your cylinder no.4 looks exactly like mine. Piston skirt is all gone by now, it is just not visible.

Unfortunately, I believe there is much truth to this:

Andy Bell sounded almost as if he had an acute episode caused by engine modifications and extreme stress on engine that day.

problem is that I travelled that Autobahn 20 many times before with at least 10 instances of similar driving manner - pedal to the metal, on other cars, including this 911 one time before, but prior EVO MS software. Other cars were similarly moded. Notably BMW E63 645ci has had same exact mods including Dinan software. I sold it long time ago, but new owner keeps in touch and reported mirror like cylinder finish at recent 220k km valve stem replacement overhaul. To many variables to make firm conclusion, but some contributing factors are worth noticing.

Hi Andy,

just found your post about your engine being rebulit.

When your cylinder 4 looked exactly like mine and your engine failed but mine is running perfectly that could only mean:
a) my photos are showing just minor scuffs that aren't deep
b) my engine is close to blowing up

Actually it would be interesting to scope 100 997.1s and 100 997.2s as well for comparo. Or just do 50/50. It could be set up like one of those Botox parties that some of our wives go or used to go to...

Just read through this thread, even thought I'm shopping for a 996. Interesting, educational and sometimes entertaining! My takeaways:

- Most cars either have or will get scoring at some point. Accept the fact. Just a matter of actually looking via borescope to confirm and not speculate.
- There are measures you can take to minimize or delay this
- Just because there is scoring it doesn't mean that the engine will go boom like with a failed IMS so take a deep breath and relax.
- Not all scoring is equal and it's quite possible to have some light marks and experience no typical symptoms and drive for many miles
- Only way to really fix this is a rebuild with Nikkies
- I'm opening a business offering bore scoping services
- Also, shame on Porsche. Curious if this issue will reach the scope of IMS and turn into another lawsuit, especially that even newer cars experience this, including models beyond 911 and Cayman.

This thread reminds me of the "me too" movement. My vag@* got scored by someone that didn't treat me right. They didn't change oil for the lubrication, nor warm me up correctly before hammering me......etc....etc....

Is this scoring issue only prevalent on Porsches? Why don’t we hear about this on other brands?

There were some links to Subaru's and BMW's dealing with it but to my knowledge it's not as widely reported, to my knowledge. I might just stick my bore cope into my Lexus GS350 and see what's what

I have the EVOMS tune on my Gen 2. Andy Bell's post above made me slightly concerned so I emailed Evolution Motorsports to ask them about the knock sensors. Sam Stone the president of the company responded fairly timely. His reply is below:
We never disable the knock sensor functionality, or any other OEM component protection strategies on DFI software. We also maintain the systems that reduce power or run the car very rich in response to high coolant/oil/intake/exhaust temperatures, with most platforms like your 997.2 reverting to OEM safety maps in these circumstances. These safety maps are the result of destructive testing at the OEM level to determine how to keep their warranteed engines from melting and failing under extreme conditions, and are usually very effective at this. So if you were to run the car super hard and raise temperatures past safety thresholds, the ECU would revert back to a completely stock mapping designed to protect the engine from damage. The least expensive engine for the cars we tune is like $10,000 on the used market, so employing this policy lets me sleep easy at night knowing we aren't rolling the dice with hundreds of engines.
I'm not burning across Germany on the Autobahn but still... I wanted some peace of mind.
