They go cheap because you cannot know whether it has a single row IMS or the one you cannot replace. Not a big deal, just plan to have the transmission dropped and depending on what you find do IMS and clutch or just clutch. Predicable effort, but the uncertainly doesn't go well with people.
If the car is tiptronic that gets throw off a bit, on the other hand a 2005 tip should be dirt cheap. And many launch vehicles are very well equipped.
That's false. The Launch editions were the first 330 built of the 997 series - pretty sure they all can be upgraded to a ceramic bearing (mine was) - and even if you found that you had the later bearing already from factory than you wouldn't even need to change it so this is a moot point.
This 997.1 C4S with AeroCup Kit looks like a lot of 997 for the money. Only 68.9k miles, and they say they had the engine completely rebuilt, and it has a clean title. Looks nice in the photos. Do your due diligence, but this one might be might be a winner for somebody, at $44.9k...

That was always my assumption. Launch edition = Model year 2005.5 = serviceable single-row IMS bearing.
There are very few M96/M97 engine rebuilders I would trust... Not exactly an American V8 that any competent machine shop can rebuild.
that's the easiest part to check out. We have a couple of qualified techs here in the Orlando area (Porsche Certified techs) now independent with good build records. I'm sure there are reliable rebuilds in So Cal. This is not rocket science. And 997 engines are not evolving technology. I'm an engineer and it would not bother me, if I can verify the shop and tech who rebuilt it.
Lots and lots of Carbon fiber, including door sills and rear center console (first time I see that, I should put option "XMJ" on my must-have list).
Great written ad with complete information, very convincing. Please note, however, that according to my records this car was for sale for $2000 less in November. I would have to look up whether it changed dealers.
Black on black, auction with reserve not met by private seller, supposedly, although pictures are from a McLaren dealer. Pulling up detailed history might be in order. Basic report is paid for an accessible in the auction.
2010 Turbo Cab PDK w/ ~48k miles (1 owner, clean Carfax, non-CPO, original MSRP of $170k) purchased on 1/12/17 in the Northeast. Car had clear bra installed all around and was in immaculate condition (only slight scrape marks on the chin spoiler). It also had a brand new set of rear tires and a new battery installed in December of 2016.
Here's the lowest priced C4S I've seen. No vin listed so can't pull a build sheet or carfax but under $30k for a 2008 C4S with 90k miles sounds pretty reasonable...
