At the risk of becoming an outcast on this Forum, there are days I figure the rain IS my wash! It's great feeling these cars handle on a wet surface! Nothing better than getting up every morning knowing the 997.2 is going to be driven ... especially the long route to work!

it wasn't today, but last Friday I took my car to Werks Reunion in Carmel. There was supposed to be about 700 Porsches there. It was definitely bigger than last year. Some absolutely beautiful cars. Here is my 997 among the many there

are these the mpss… unless ur tires sit in the hot sun all day long it is VERY rare and unlikely that they disintegrate like that!!! either way i am happy nothing badhappened in the end!

edit - they don't look like mpss or mps to me… pirelli or bridgestone?

I bought the car CPO in January and have only put 4000 miles on it, but the wear is definitely uneven on both rear tires, with more wear towards the inside. The tire's manufacture date is 2010. Maybe they're just too old??? I don't know.

If anyone has any theories, please let me know! Thanks!

Can you get a pic of the whole tire tread area? I am far from an expert but from the cracks beneath the area that shredded, I'd guess they got too cold at some point.

As for alignments, toe is the killer of the inner surface.

myw: Thanks. I'm thankful, too, that nothing worse happened! I was lucky to only be 2 miles from home. They are Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires. I wonder if they sat in the heat in storage for a long time before they were actually installed on the car. The car's prior owners lived in Florida, so the tires could have sat in a hot warehouse for a while.

motopix: I took another photo, which shows the entire width of the tire, but I can't get it to attach from my computer. I'll try to do it from my phone next. Hold on...

The rubber in between the tread blocks looks seriously degraded. I think you are very lucky not to have had a blow out at speed. This could have been a blessing in disguise.

What is the date code on the tire?

I lost my rear MPSS tires last December. My tread was as deep as yours across the entire tire. But the cord popped through on the inside edge. It looks like you've got some cord showing as well. The CPO should have caught this IMHO. Do an alignment and check your toe in when you replace these. I've seen sides of cars destroyed when tires separated. It's amazing how much this can shred a Corvette! At the end of the day, you were lucky.

EMC2: I agree I was lucky this happened now because I'm autocrossing this Sunday and have a PCA DE October. Better now than during either of those events! Date code is 4910, which I think means 49th week of 2010. I too noticed how bad the cracks are in the grooves when I looked at the photo!

Wayne: I agree CPO should have caught this. Thanks for the advice!

I installed, after a rebuild of the rear, my HRE's. Here is a picture taken yesterday at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen.

I have a lame question for you guys(sorry in advance )

I had my rims "plastidipped" in gloss black. I love how they look now.---don't ask me for a pic, I can't get a picture on this forum if my life depended on it!

What should I be using to clean my rims? Can I still use regular mag cleaner.(The guys at the dealership said , just don't use anything to harsh. What does that mean?

I will get a pic on this forum eventually, lol

Thanks for that info, which makes me conclude, that is not what they did to my rims, They took the tires off the rims , stripped them , then dipped them. But that is not paint, right? They don't paint rims, do they? it would chip, no?

Anyways, I left a message at the dealership to let me know what that service is called. ---How lame am I? I had a service done on my rims and am not sure what it is called. ( I'm getting old)
