You probably have access to steep declines, so the next time you're out in your 996 Turbo you can see what happens (without exceeding the red line) when coasting downhill in 2nd gear with your foot off the throttle
I'm not sure that would even be possible... Maybe on a really steep hill with your foot full on the gas, bouncing off the rev limiter as well. Otherwise the compression braking would be far more of a slowing effect than gravity accelerating it into the red. Of course I've never tried it!
One of my trucks, when pulling a trailer, occasionally gears itself into 3rd at which point the revs jump to 4k when coming south bound down the Coke - now, the engine is 'good' for it, however, when it does that, I have visions of dumping gearboxes and bits of engine in my wake... Normally, I never push it past 3k, nor do I have to. Pucker factor high, noise something to behold.

Some years ago when I bought my R I was in Burrard Acura for a service, the service manager took me into the shop to show me another R in which the owner downshifted from 5th to 2nd at around 100mph. As one would imagine, the trans axle (or, at least, what was left of it), was shattered, but what was more interesting than that was the two rods through the block, along with what looked like a warped head.
When asked how the driver managed to get it into second at that speed, the service manager said, 'with difficulty'...
I imagine the driver had to be yanking on the shifter something fierce to pull that off.
I hit the limiter in a slight drift in second on one particular corner on a regular basis. Just does not feel right to lift in that particular situation, although i really should. There is another stop sign on an up hill into a corner where it also hit the limiter in first. I don't worry about it too much, these engines are solid.

I changed mine over to the Amber, and I had them programmed so they flashed with my turn signals. Just a bit safer so people can see. I see a lot of the new cars have an extra set of blinkers on the mirrors...
I take it that it's pouring over there too - when you get a moment and it's dry, try and snap a few pics of the turbos so we can have a look - finish looks excellent too.
