Sounds like I need to drop the sump plate during my next oil change. Have microscope to inspect!
Thanks Jake!

"Jake, what's a finger test?"
Well, I'm certainly not Jake, but if I had to guess I'd say - wipe your (clean) finger around the bottom of the sump plate then rub it together with another finger on the same hand...If you feel any grit/rough stuff in there besides a smooth oily feeling, you can bet that your bearings, crank journals and anything else in your motor with tight moving tolerances can too

I knew if I waited long enough, an intellectually stimulating conversation would be brought down to our level with an innocent "finger test"

I took the finger test to mean sticking your finger up in the oil filter discharge port in the engine to see if there is any debris.

With the multiples references to pulling the sump plate, it seems obvious it is a finger check around the sump for debris.

Not obvious to me. Once you pull the sump plate you use your eyes. You cannot see up into the filter discharge port hence the finger test.

You got it...
And if there's any debris there, its time to say bye bye to your main and road bearings. Why? Because that debris laden oil has a one way, non-stop ticket straight to them.
If I find ANY debris in this area, I won't touch the engine.

Jake, have you got the photos of the motor? Would be interesting to see all that destruction you described.

The engine is now his, if he doesn't want to post pictures then so be it, don’t push it.
