Well, I don't know if I'd call it wisdom, I was just wondering about an early oil change thinking it would give you a chance to have a look at the oil filter housing oil and filter element for anything possibly scary.

Not trying to sow seeds of anxiety just playing the conservative, the extra cautious card.

OK, gotcha, Mac.

Got confirmation today that the shipper picked up my blown motor on Friday, so it's on it's way to Jake's.

Hopefully we will soon know what killed the motor.

Yes, thats 40 documented, in my failure log, since Jan 1, 2015.

To be fair, I will say that at least 8 of these had failed over the summer and etc and are just now being reported, as guys try to figure out what to do with tax refunds.

Yesterday I added two failures to the log, both were low mileage 99' 996s and both had cylinder failures, the calls cam in within 50 miles of each other and within 7 minutes of each other!

Broken timing chains, no doubt about it.

I don't know if you can get a running 996 for $5-$6. What a roller is worth is another story so saying they are putting $20K engines in a $5-$6K car is a little misleading. A running 996 is usually around $15-up now days and that's what the $20K engine needs to be compared to.

Have to agree with the logic. That was the reason I didn't sell my car as a roller. They are worth nothing without a running motor. That thought process worked for me.

It seems that Renold had a batch of soft chains in 04, that's the only reason I can think of. We have caught two 04s in the process of losing chains while evaluating for our IMS retrofit procedures.

The 02 is the worst for valve seat failures and guide wear. The early 03 is the same.

Jake, what are the common failures you see on the early (98) 3.4 engine?

And with that clarification the later production 03 996 is the most wonderful, indestructible 911 ever made justifying a premium price! Right? Well, it was worth a shot.....

I believe Jake's autopsy of the motor is this week.

Jake, can you post the findings in this thread to keep everything in one place?
