I agree with, JD. My car, too, has the 2005 reman engine (per the serial number). When Rennsport KC (in Kansas City) replaced the clutch last year, he verified in order to change out the IMS bearing, it would require splitting the cases. A LOT of work, for little reassurance, in my opinion. Rest easy that there are less miles. I've driven the hell out of mine for 6 years. The last 2 years, its been under an additional 6psi of supercharger pressure, many times.

Carfax seems to be the only 'carfax like' service that shows Porsche dealership service info... On all of my Porsche's, autocheck and others show reports similar to the above, but carfax shows extensive dealership service into.

If your paying ~$8K+ fpr an engine, it seems worth the $40 carfax fee to know how many miles are on it, even if it's a bit of a gamble that the info is shown.

(but I always hate paying the $40 for a single carfax VIN as well...)

There will be failures, no doubt in my mind. Will Porsche release all these numbers to us. I again doubt it. Blame it on not having the ability but I've heard of independent's having these engine failures come in on a monthly basis to deal with. And that's from a low production model vs Honda/Toyota engines out there. Your smoking real good stuff thinking that it wouldn't happen again.
Their **** engines, not performance engines, not built to track and not built to be driven in all climates in all weather conditions. Their best driven under warm weather, garage kept queens that don't see the driving that the old ones were made to do. Outside of perfect conditions and the failure rates sky rocket. Sorry as much as I love Porsche and what it used to stand I am no fanboy and know when I have been had.

Thanks for the info, Jay! What I'd really like to find out is the mileage when the motor was replaced. Not sure if that will show up on carfax or not, but I would think the dealer could look this up from the VIN, if the dealer is willing.

Mike, my 03 has a reman engine as well, a little older in SN than yours. Carfax showed that it was "removed for repair" in 05 at the dealer and lists the mileage.

I only agree if your talking exercised from cold taken out from warm weather or warm garage, put away in a warm garage and driven like any other car out there following the laws of the road. This is what I meant by perfect conditions. As long as the engine is all ready warm and running, driving in cold weather is fine as long as the engines running or warm the whole time. Performance driving is another story I think this severely reduces the amount of engine life it does have.

Every time I see a comparison of Porsche CEF vs. Honda/Toyota, my first question is: What is the ownership demographic? And how likely is each brand's ownership demographic to drive the cars hard? You want to compare CEF rates, consider the amount of CEF in late 90s Integras and you'll see that Honda CEFs are not that much different.

First, glad to see your using the correct acronym. The main difference is probably the extreme cost of a CEF in a 996 compared to the cost of a CEF in an late 90's Integra which is practically worthless with or without a blown engine.

Hah, thanks. Its' probably less shock for Integra owners to realize they just lost $4000 in value vs. losing $20,000 with the 996. Though I doubt an Integra roller is even worth $1000. Probably more like the current scrap weight.
