No way I would trade a 914 for a M96 engine. Just IMHO...

So is there a maintenance regime that a 996 owner should/ could do to dig into these engines and hopefully avoid this situation?

Seems spending even a few $K that might have been money well spent.

If the issue really is a rod bolt that worked its way out, there is no PM routine that would prevent this (short of disassembling your engine and replacing every part with the potential to fail, come loose, or otherwise cause mayhem).

Internal combustion engines have lots of moving parts, and sometimes, a part comes loose, breaks off, or otherwise ends up where it shouldn't be, and problems ensue. While this may or may not be one of Jake's documented modalities, these things happen. Google "hole in engine block" - you'll get about 1.5 million results for many, many makes and models...

Checked my "sent" folder and it shows it went through, but I just re-sent the email.

I did tons of PM stuff on the car, replaced many items before they needed replacing. So, it was just bad luck, I guess.

I am 'rebuilding' an M96 now. The best source of info IMHO on preventing/fixing the 30 modes of failure of the M96 is Jake Raby. Never met him, never paid him a dime.He knows it,yet he has helped me several times. O.k his 'bedside manner' is a little rough but I go elsewhere for sweet-talk !
Unfortunately some forum members here have so irritated Jake from the peanut gallery that 26 of those modes got dumped from his upcoming book - M96 the Definitive Guide. That loss is an irreplaceable loss to those of us trying to succeed at rebuilding the M96. In addition he does not contribute as much as he used to. I understand why -when you try to help the Porsche community by sharing hard-won,valuable info and knowledge ,yet get slammed for it -it is logical to keep that knowledge to yourself.
Just try to get M96 wear tolerances/limits from Porsche ! They will not tell you anything and their manuals are equally silent. Jake knows all these precious numbers. His numbers help save these cars and their value. Porsche's silence prematurely condemns them to mere parts cars. A few Rennlisters are just making this sad situation worse by sending Jake highly critical PMs. So he just politely withdraws from sharing his knowledge with us.
Jake is criticized for scaremongering. I suggest it is the responsibility of the reader to evaluate the risk of one of these modes of failure occurring. If the reader can't (or will not bother to) evaluate the risk why is it scaremongering ?
Personally I would rather know all the problems and then attempt to attach a risk/cost factor. Mike Focke is really good at that.
https://sites.google.com/site/mikefo...engineblows%3F
Many of the solutions are simple/inexpensive ,so should be welcomed by our entire community - for example choosing the best engine oil and ,the subject of this thread -rod bolts. If you compare the stock Porsche rod bolt with the ARP replacement you will understand. The ARP bolt is about the same price retail as the OEM part.
http://arp-bolts.com/kits/ARPkit-det...?RecordID=1203
The Oem part is merely a poorly chosen generic item by comparison.
Who knew some new Iwis timing chains snap and the Renold chain is better in those situations ? Jake is the only source I know who mentioned this. So for my build, I am trying to replace the IWIS chains I already bought. Thanks Jake. Better now than when one snaps on a newly rebuilt engine.
I applaud any warnings and photos about rod bolt failure so it can be addressed. How is that scaremongering ?
For those fearing what happens to the 'value' of their 996 because of an open discussion of the M96 issues -I suggest that the ostrich approach will be far worse. If people like me with the time, skills(??), funds and resources to repair the engine fail because of lack of basic machining specifications or knowledge of defective new replacement parts- it will have a much greater negative impact on resale values. Those of us who are 'rebuilding' these engines for our own cars are often spending more than the 'roller' value of the car in parts and machining, spending huge amounts of time researching and wrenching. If after all this the rebuild fails for want of a little shared technical information, it is a sad day for any Porsche enthusiast and particularly this great Forum. We'll just abandon Porsche ,choose a competitor brand and share our experience in a new home. And that will be what really torpedoes the value of any M96/7 car.
It is the independent developers like LN & Raby who actually fix the M96/7 problems -not the peanutters, nor Porsche.I suggest LN & Raby are deserving of our full and enthusiastic support.By sniping at Raby ,you do him no harm .You just hit the rest of the M96 owners in the cross-fire.
So please join in helping find solutions to all the M96/7 problems. Please don't shoot the messengers.

Do I have to? I already know how much they know about engines from the continued oil discussions.....

This is your best option! Good strike of luck to find this so quickly.

For the rest of us, we will have nightmares about rod bolts...

I have found the best protection against nightmares is to sleep on a giant pile of cash. Fixes almost all problems.

Now, acquiring said giant pile of cash, that keeps me up nights.

Well - any motor can fail, these just seem to fail at a higher rate than you might expect. For those of us getting into the 996 recently, that helped us out on the front end in valuation. If something happens to mine I would look for a used motor or do a LS conversion or sell the car as a roller, or even part it out maybe. It wouldn't be the end of the world.

Meanwhile I will maintain mine like I do all of my vehicles and enjoy it while I've got it.

Jake it just doesn't make sense to try to "make everybody happy" it will never happen. I"m trying to find out the name of the company that does your garbage pick up so I can bribe the driver to save the info from the can! Seriously I agree with what SCHNELL GELB said in his post 100%.

I find just driving the damn car and enjoying it is the best remedy to all such worries.

What will be will be and stressing about it before hand rather defeats the purpose in having such a car in the first place.

It does suck if your number comes up unlucky though and I feel for Cuda and all others that have lost a motor through no fault of their own.
