17mm ball mount with USB-C cable pass through is complete (with the exception of an outer edge filet that I forgot on this version). The ball/extension is reinforced with an M5 screw.
I'll be traveling for the next couple weeks. In that time I'll order a couple Magsafe mounts so I can confirm fitment and more print material.
What would also be nice is a discreet hole that could be used to route a cable through it for MagSafe wireless charging mounts. Then we can hook up the wiring behind the dash for a clean install.
Wow, the USB-C cable hole is such a sweet bonus, fantastic idea!!!
This is great! I am in for a ball mount. My preferred mount uses a slightly smaller ball, but I am guessing it may work with this ball. One other thing you might consider before production, what if you had a common trim mount, then different attachments based on what one's preferred mounting is? That would give you a two-part but much more adaptable product. Just an idea.
Definitely considering the options via adapter route. That was actually what I did for my first design on the 17mm ball mount (see below). Doesn't look as clean unfortunately. My plan (and I want to hear feedback on this) is to offer a few different options that are all 3D printed but application specific. If volume ever justifies switching to injection molding parts, I'd offer a free replacement to all prior purchasers.
Personally I don't mind either option as it will normally be hidden behind the actual mount anyway. Ultimately I think the price will be the tiebreaker if I was to vote on one option over another. That's my 2 cents.
One more tweak you may want to consider: if the section with the mount could be extended further to the right, to make the whole thing more of an egg shape, then the mounted phone would be in a more offset position. This could give greater access to the hazard light button. If the gap between steering wheel & phone is a little larger this may also be a better position for the phone.
FWIW I'd consider one, if you could make them in a darker black finish & suitable for a RHD (UK) car.
Late to the discussion again. Looks fantastic. I haven't bought a mount yet because none seem to put the phone in a decent spot. I don't like sticking stuff to the dash, so those are out. Count me in, one of each type!
