I've had a number of projects in the works over the winter. Given the chatter lately regarding phone and other device/display mounts, I figure it's probably time to reveal my hazard trim phone mount. This design is compatible with Quadlock products (https://www.quadlockcase.com/), but I can make other versions if guys want to make some suggestions. Don't mind the current color. It'll be black in future prints now that I have my resin mixture sorted out. Final version will have metal threads rather than the tapped plastic (even though the tapped plastic has held up well in the mount I designed for my 4Runner). Love to hear everyone's thoughts.
Original and 3D printed trim with mounting base. Installed in instrument cluster binnacle. Another view of the mount base. With Quadlock head and single pivot attachment. Phone in landscape view is at the same level as the instrument cluster. Portrait view does block one of the air vents.
So had the pleasure this past Saturday to get in some track testing and a ride along with @De Jeeper in his GT3ish. The (awesome) experience brought up the question of how is the mount affected by broken or degraded spring clips. We discussed it, and figured it would be a good idea to include new springs with each mount. After a little more thought I decided to eliminate the need for the spring clips all together, and revised my design to instead use the screw holding the instrument cluster binnacle to the dashboard. The new design is now two parts (base and insert).
Pros:
- No deflection/displacement under load.
- Easy to remove (and eliminates any risk of damage to the mount) if needing to access/remove the instrument cluster and binnacle.
- Ability to easily swap inserts if needing the change to a different mount type (say from a B mount used with an AIM device to a 17mm Magsafe charging device).
Cons:
- Additional tools needed for install (2mm Allen key and a Torx driver), but looking to include those.
- Additional time and material to produce on my end due to the two piece design.
I'm really happy with the new design. Still have three mount types (Quad Lock, 17mm ball, and RAM B) both with and without a cut out for a USB cable. Currently printing parts in an attempt to build up a little inventory, and putting the finishing touches a website to handle order placement. Shooting to go live with that sometime this weekend. I'll add step-by-step install instructions with pictures.
Wow. That is great!! What a solution for the single DINN radio/GT3 console delete folks.
How robust is that area of the dash, as far as supporting the weight of a phone?
VERY Nice!
I’d be interested in one.
Also interested if you ever make a carbon fiber version
Carbon fiber could be tough with all the detailed features. An overlay might be possibility.

Its a pretty robust area for a phone. Anyone who has removed the trim for instrument cluster or dash work should have a pretty good idea. The trim is supported all along the outside by the binnacle, on the inside by the actual hazard switch, and secured with two clamps. I thought about also using the the screw that secures the binnacle to dash for additional support, but that doesn't seem necessary. One of the bigger challenges was getting the material flexible enough so that it could be removed without damage.

What would be the sales price?
I'm initially thinking somewhere around $40 depending on interest, but I still need to figure out my cost (and time) per piece. It'd be wonderful if there's enough interest to justify injection mold tooling.
For the guys using Magsafe mounts, are there any particular go-to mounts on the market that an adapter or a particular size ball mount that would be preferred?

I am very interested in a magsafe option. I am currently using this mount from amazon that uses what seems to be a pretty generic ball mount. ~$40 seems like a very reasonable price so if you do manage to create a ball mount version you got my order.
great work, that looks like a brilliant solution for a phone mount, as all the other options I've seen are much lower down & outside line of sight.
re: magsafe & ballmounts
Both of the following ESR items can be attached to the ball from a rennline exact fit mount (Porsche 996/986 ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount | Rennline) So you might want to consider using the same sized ball mount for yours.
Love this and something I've been thinking about. I like your execution a lot and I think the placement is perfect. I currently have the Rennline mount which works fine but places the phone way too low causing you to take your eyes off the road. With phones being bigger and bigger I also find that a passanger often knocks it off. This solution solves both! Well done! It would be awesome if you could transfer the magnet from a rennline mount along with it's ball and install onto your piece. That would be a clean solution.
