Sorry guys, no updates. I was out of town the past few days at a funeral. I will be back at it this week, hopefully wrapping up all the fabricated parts so we can start testing.

George has been back at it, it is on its way to me now to final assembly, inspect, one last flow test, then onto Sally's engine it will go...

Default Update..

Everything on it's way to Skip. My part is done for now.
I apologize if seems that the project isn't moving at a quick pace, but I've done far too many projects at someone else's (rushed) pace. This project deserves the time and effort to be done properly.

Beautiful! The finishing touch would be an anodized finish in customer’s choice of color.

^^^^ Please, no apologies necessary. Take as much time as you need. Please don't feel rushed. We are like children when we see a new thing that we want, gimme gimme gimme! Delayed gratification will win the day!
Continued thanks to you and Skip for your untiring, and public, work for these cars.

What surface finish and coating would give the least thermal resistance to air? That surface has some amount of air moving across it. It would be good, if not cost prohibitive, to create a surface that would more easily give away some heat the air moving across it.

Yes, please be patient, once the flow volume test and the pressure drop tests are completed, things will move along very quickly

Probably a standard Mil-Spec Hardcoat anodize would be the best option, type II or III. We utilize this on a lot of the aerospace components we manufacture, most all of which are fluid motion and transfer for fuel delivery, and fuel pumps themselves. Generally the coating itself is more for corrosion resistance and to create a surface harder than tool steel for added wear properties. Having this done would help slightly with heat dispersion, but only to a small degree. Surface finish would have a greater impact, which is why on a larger scale, heat sinks (veined material) do so well at heat dissipation, the same can be said on a microscopic level, but to a smaller degree.

How long does it take the machine to carve out that piece of aluminum?

Probably around an hour of cutting time for the sump plate alone. Machining technique for making one of something is different than machining ten or a hundred. The cost/benefit of me tweaking the machining method to reduce the cycle time pays off much more as quantity increases. Tweaking process is never really finished. Always an improvement can be made on the tooling and machining method or workholding method, especially as new technology emerges or becomes accessible/affordable.

I'm just super impressed how transparent you guys have been on the idea, the prototype MFG and how you think it will work.

It's a hard problem and for you guys to give some of the M96 folks that work the cars hard hope that a solution to such a long standing issue is in the works with the level of transparency you have really shows your commitment to get it right.
