There are a couple cars I am really fired up to see shredding this year, yours and @theprf at the top of the list. I can't wait to see you at Thompson, there's no way my car will be done but I'll give you some tips to make sure you don't go faster than me Maybe I'll throw a BBQ in the truck and make myself useful.
The paint work and aero stuff looks killer and the Aim is going to open up a new world of geeking on cars that most guys round these parts don't even know exists. Let me know if you want any of my thompson logs and I'll go over the details with you of them from behind the wheel, with the video, may help get you up to speed a little faster.
The whole Aim thing is still a little over my head, the good thing is i will have 2 if not 3 track days done by the time i get to thompson. Ill deff take some tips on both the track and the aim.
This has been great to read, love the build, though I must say its giving me bad ideas involving a crate M96/76 for my 1999 if my M96/01 ever decides to eat its cylinder wall linings...
I already do love the motor and yes trans and 3/4 of the donor car. If u get a spare 30min read the entire thread. Lots of details.
...
I did read s much as I could. Fascinating story.
Did you go with a lightweight flywheel? If so, you should also replace the pulley on the engine. There is more information on this in the 996 GT3 forum.

the donor car had a fresh clutch so no. In the future it will get the lwfw and pulley. I do read the gt3 forum but dont participate much.
Sorry I don't know if it was answered yet but what lift cart are you using. I'd like to pull the engine in my VW as well as the 996 some time soon and that thing looks perfect for the job

Harbor Freight 1000lb unit. Its alwaya on backorder so u need to keep checking inventory.
I probably missed it, but whats the airbox situation? I know the intake point switches sides between OEM GT3 and Carrera airboxes, so did you swap the whole deck lid for a GT3 lid, or were you able to rig up something else? Im trying to figure out if you can fit a Mezger under an OEM deck lid with the retractable spoiler right now, mostly wondering what the interference looks like with the cooling fan and intake path. Thanks!
Edit: just realized you said cup deck lid. Did you ever have the original Carrera aerokit decklid on the car by chance?

I swapped over the gt3 deck lid from the donor. My car had an Aero mk2 lid but i sold it off. You could modify an aero lid for the opposite air cleaner and fan but i highly doubt a stock style tailbase would work with a factory gt3 airbox. Switch to a cone filter and any of the lids will work.
The curremt decklid is the getty cup decklid with the gt3 underside panel.
Now for my rant about ecs. The mezger motor used a plastic oil filter lid so i bought ecs aluminun lid fir $85. What they fail to tell u is the over pressure valve has to be swapped over or give any direction to do so. This is not easy and may not be possible without destoying the origional lid. So of course i broke it and had buy another plastic $75 lid from porsche. i wasnt gonna cut up a brand new lid so i just installed it and now im looking for a broken or cheap lid to cut up, uhg.
My understanding (which could very well be wrong and is based on some reading concerning the M9A1 motor) is that Porsche views the plastic housing as disposable due to the internal spring potentially weakening over time. Yea? Nay? 🤷

I would consider that as an excuse for a crap part and a way to make money. Its $85 for garbage when they could just sell u a spring for $2 to change as every 50k miles
Also i think the pressure spring is a lot less important with the dry sump but i have not researched that.

No argument from me on that.
But I did recently buy a new one for my 2011 Spyder just in case.

i could paid the price, but I have always been conservative with my money. I have a great mechanic that is reasonable to me as I’m constantly getting him new customers. I admire the knowledge that Jake Raby and Skip have but come on there are other more cost effective options. Jake is probably the most expensive engine rebuilder and definitely some people will never buy from him. Skip has developed two great products, solutions, but if i saw it correctly $3,000 for a sump??? Actually I was in a conversation with another 996 owner yesterday and we
were talking about the sump. Both of us don’t track out cars but like them as fast as possible. When he was asking me about the sump i said looks like an awesome product but i wouldn’t buy it because the way I handle money. He said well you can afford it , can you explain. Then I said, for less than the $3k cost of the sump, i got
soul headers, fabspeed x pipe with the cheaters, new water pump, new serpentine belt, new low temp thermostat, new coils, new plugs, a
carrera s 3.8 air box, and a APR
tune. I took care of the lower oil pressure, tensioners rattle by using 5
qts Mobil 1 5W50, with the rest 0W40. I think zbomb said it best in one of his posts, he wants to go as fast as possible cheap.
