Because the “narrative” was patently falsified. The motor is quite the opposite of a “time bomb”, and when maintained and operated properly, has proven to be a most reliable platform long term (IE half million miles and counting in numerous, well documented examples).
As for the unique “aesthetics” this is wholly subjective but I’m not alone in vastly preferring the 996 design over 993. I sold a 993 for Type 996 as soon as it was released and never regretted that move. In fact that is the only 911 I don’t regret selling. Ugly IMO, and finicky high strung motor that was the only 911 in almost 40 years to break down on me. I’ll never own another 993 but I hope to own many more 996’s. I want them in all Skittles colors and Mezger flavors. This is just my subjective opinion on aesthetics of course. Undeniably though every Type 996 motor I’ve ever owned has been a rock solid performer. I’m a true believer in 996. They convinced me, and I’m on my fourth!
BTW I’m with you on 964 true classic best of the air cooled breed IMO. I could get by with just one 964 & 996 and be happy.

Amen to that brother! I dumped a 1996 Polar Silver C2 for an 1999 C2 Coupe and never looked back. Nothing better back there. And nothing else ahead. 1999 was it IMO. Ferry died and 911 died with him. 992 is a great sports car but not a 911 IMO. Just my opinion, of course.

Just my opinion, but when Porsche introduced the 996 in 1998 it looked way too close to the 986 Boxster. Not that the Boxster looked bad, but at the time I recall thinking this was sort of a design cop-out by Porsche. It looked like they just gave up designing the front and said "screw it use the 986 parts". Now, we know that's not exactly the case, but perception is king and the perception was the new 911 looks too much like the "poor man's Porsche". Imagine if the 1972 911 looked exactly like a 914 from the front. There was also the fact that the water-cooled engine was never going t be loved by air cooled purists (I was a VW kid so I loved that the modern Porsche was still air cooled). Changing up the headlights (and subsequently the taillights) to a more "modern" at the time clear lamp went a long way in fixing the looks, but the damage was done by then. For a long while I preferred the 996.2 headlights but I came around to the 996.1, and yes, even the amber lens ones when on certain colors (this is an example where the amber just works so well https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...11-carrera-191 )
I ended up with a 996.1 with clear lensed litronic headlights as my first P car and couldn't be happier. I also can't see the headlights from the driver's seat.

I hate when people say that. It implies that being in the car saves you from having to look at the headlights like they are bad or something. The GT1 inspired headlights are one of the nicest things about the car. It's what really defines the 996.

I think a lot of the 996 issues were it being the first water-cooled 911, and a lot of what has driven the 993 is being the last Aircooled 911. I own all the. are, and I personally dopn;t care for the 964, or the 993 as much as a G body car. The only thing I like about my 993 is the climate control. I pretty much only drive the car in the hot summer, because the AC works so well.
The 996 has grown, and will continue to do so. I have seen a swing in the 996 ownership in the last 18 months. The people buying, and looking for cars are no longe just looking for a cheap 911, which had been the case for the last 5 years, or so before.

??? Um.. the 993 looked virtually identical to the 968 from the front. Most public can’t tell them apart at all until the rear of the car is visible. And the 930S used the EXACT same headlamp factory part number as the lowly 944. This German approach to leveraging parts between models is as old as Germany (look at Mercedes/BMW/VW headlights from the same generation they’re ALL virtually identical across ALL models [some still are]).
And you're just recycling circa 2000’s U.S. Road & Track 996 hate speech reaching for straws on why the uninitiated never “got” Ferry’s primordial (and last) racecar for the street. The 996 GT1/GT3/Carrera designs were DECADES ahead of their time, and are only now even beginning to be appreciated by the general public as timeless classics.
No one outside the Porsche Museum even knew what a 996 GT1 Evo Strassenversion was ten years ago. Now they’re routinely hammering in Monaco for $20,000,000.00+

Lots of people aren't aware of the GT1. They only know of the Carrera GT as the original Porsche "hypercar"

air cool car this is as close as it gets. The 996.2 are a little different, but I can tell a lot of difference driving a 997.1. I wanted to find a white one like Jake likes, but it was impossible and when they would show up the prices were
high. Anyway, my 1979 white rx7 with a 13b and a Holley 750 license plate, mywhtho. It was in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 so I had no issues with that custom license plate.
