To me personally, and in my attempt to assess the market, I would argue that the "best of the best" narrow body 996.1 value (both in terms of financial value and joy of owning/driving), independent of year, has all of the following:
  1. C2
  2. 6-speed
  3. Coupe
  4. Full leather (having owned both, vastly prefer full leather)
  5. 3-spoke wheel (I'm a vintage guy, so I get the retro love on RL, but I don't think the market sees it that way (and, having owned both, I vastly prefer the 3-spoke))
  6. Dual-row IMS
  7. Deviation in interior colors (e.g. "non sea of ________ " (e.g. beige, gray, etc.))
  8. HiFi option (for acceptable (certainly not spectacular) sound from OEM)
  9. Original in most respects (no after market intake, exhaust, aftermarket wheels, aftermarket amps, etc)
  10. Cable frunk release (not sure the market knows enough to discern this though)
Everybody's personal opinion is different, but from a "value" perspective, financial and otherwise, I'd argue that the above combination is difficult to beat in a narrow body 996.

I don't want to promote this kind of reply, but barring anything exceptional, that car was "well bought", if not "stolen". What a deal given prices over the past year.

Meanwhile, in the BaT comments, the "speckled roadway" is really detracting from one commenter's ability to bid. That place is a clown show.

The Graphite Grey cars without deviating carpet always tank on BaT. Just how it is.

We're also getting into that quarter of the year where people are less prone to be out looking for a "fun" car.

There are many 996 deals to be had still. If increase is an end game (or an attribution to ownership), bet on waiting another 5 years, possibly longer, for potential movement "worth while".

Totally agree in fact there will always be online bargains and BaT steals for every generation, just fewer and further in between; and predominantly found on Craigslist instead of Autotrader.

Guaranteed $500k then for sure!

I was surprised that post didn't stir up a lot of discussion. Obviously there are a lot of opinions about what would make them valuable long term, would love to hear thoughts from others. My 996 will never leave the family, so I couldn't care less about value, but it's interesting to discuss.

I think you're mostly right. I believe the biggest driving factor will always be color with regards to collectibility and resale though.

IMO the top three Classic 911 collectibility factors are:

1. Color
2. Color
3. Color

Beyond that it's all about color

I don't think that is correct at all. Of course, color is always important for any car, but for the 996 specifically and uniquely, there are many other important factors.

The value/enjoyment of an individual 996 is dependent on options/configurations far more than any brand or model car I can think of. A C4/Cab/Tip 996.1 weighs 400 lbs more than a C2/Coupe/6-speed. If you go to extremes, a C4S/cab/tip (996.2 obviously) weighs 631 lbs more than a 996.1 C2/Coupe/6-speed. Awd drives very differently than 2wd. Tip drives very differently from 6-speed. The cars in those different configurations drive very, very differently. There is a world of difference between full-leather and not full-leather (most of the perceived interior cheapness disappears). There is a huge difference between 3-spoke and 4-spoke steering wheel. All of the choices are important and significantly impact enjoyment of the car.

Fortunately, there are usually enough 996's available that you can use your color preferences to choose a pool of contenders, and then choose which options/configuration within that group is best for your needs.
