Do you have a quick and dirty comparison between the driving experience of your 993 and GT4? Guessing it was a 981 GT4? I have always thought a GT4 would be one of the water cooled candidates to complete my dream garage but it sounds like for you they scratched a similar itch and having both did not make sense. I've never driven a 981 GT4, only a Cayman S.

You need to understand the application for the car. I had a 981 GT4, have a 718 Spyder (basically same as 718 GT4) and a 993 C2S among other stuff.

I wouldn't compare the GT4 platform with the 993, completely different cars. Speaking about stock cars....if you want to do well at the track...GT4 is the way to go. If you want a small/tight/crisp handling/street fast/fast on the turns track car/modern car....GT4 is the way to go. I think combining a GT4 and 993 would be a good pairing, but depends on your criteria and application.

If you can swing a 991.2/992 GT3 along with the 993, that would be an excellent pairing. You could call it a day unless you wanted a convertible too or specific nuances from other generations.

yes yes yes the 1 millionth Porsche vehicle was a 993 Carrera S 25 years ago today!

“The one millionth vehicle from the Porsche production was a 911/993. I was allowed to be there when 25 years ago today Ferry Porsche handed this car over to the Stuttgart police and celebrated this anniversary. In the picture v. r.: WR, Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Dr. Walter Döring (former Minister of Economy), Prof. Dr. Dr. Ferry Porsche, Erwin Teufel (Prime Minister Baden-Württemberg), Horst Marchart (Head of Development) and far left on the edge of the picture Klaus Steckkönig, who organized the celebration at the time. Already in 1966, Ferry Porsche gave the hundred thousandth car, an early 912 Targa, to the Stuttgart guardians and followed this tradition after 30 years. Of course it wasn't the one millionth 911 as it says wrong on a sign. This Carrera S in Irish green was reached in 2017 and handed over to the Porsche Museum by Wolfgang Porsche. By the way: the 993th of 1996 is again owned by the Porsche Museum. After a police officer had an accident by car years later, it was returned to Porsche. Klaus Bischof caught up ok with Wiedeking and organized the elaborate repair. Since then, the police have been driven on special occasions in 993, such as the Solitude Revival, when the former policeman's son presented the car in honor of his father. The handover of the car was also one of the last public performances of Ferry Porsche. We all keep him in dignified memory.”

Me either. So many it made me go look at mine. What I noticed is many items shown on Porsche’s option list are not on my sticker. For example color center caps, immobilizer, aluminum shifter and handbrake.

Here’s one of the best listings I’ve found.

Yep. Reminder reading that article after it hit my inbox. I laughed a bit.

For the money honestly, I hopped up 993 with a regear, a little tuning, an easy diet, and some cushy bits would put the experience over a GT4 any day. Rather up to GT3 and have both. One for the stroll with the Lady, and the other for when you want to play on course.

@TheDangerZone , it was a 981. Carmine red. The GT4 sounds awesome. It is a midengine car and very much feels like one. The handling is excellent - very responsive and darty ( in a good way). It's an excellent car. Yes the GT4 and the 993 are very different cars, but they also fit within the same niche in my garage -- a weekend, sunny day fun car. Something I can blast around in and drive simply for the sake of driving. For that mission - I find the 993 is more fulfilling.

- The gearing on the GT4 is annoying. Super tall gears means there is less shifting. The car doesn't feel as fast as it should because of this and yet winding out the car is impractical on the street in many cases.

- The steering is numb compared to the 993. There is just no comparison - the steering on the 993 is just so much more communicative and alive in comparison. Hard to articulate this, but the GT4 feels more artificial in this sense.

- The GT4, though smaller than most cars, still feels large in comparison to a 993. I like small cars.

- The GT4 has a very narrow, short greenhouse. You really sit IN the GT4 compared to the 993. It's more bunker like in comparison to the 993 which has that big beautiful upright windshield and massive greenhouse. The 993 feels more immediate and go-kart like as a result.

- You have to be going much faster in the GT4 is wake it up in comparison to a 993. 40 MPH in a 993 can be fun. Because of the gearing, it's hard to wind out the GT4 on public roads, but it's not torquey enough to make up for that. The power band is not as usable. The 993, though slower, is easier to wind out and play around with without getting illegal.

Really it comes down to this -- the 993 (at least how I have my car set up) is just more fun to drive. I love the way it looks. I love the way it feels and how it's put together. It is almost always the most beautiful car driving on the road at any given time. The 993 triggers happy reactions and positivity, whereas the GT4 tended to trigger some negative reactions.

For me - I'm getting a 992 TTS to partner the 993 which is the best of both worlds for me. I will have the old school 993 along with the spaceship 992TTS with its ridiculous power and torque that's immediate and limitless. The 992's steering is improved and Porsche did a good job with that platform in terms of feel.

@rk-d Really appreciate the run down. Will have to try a 981 GT4 for myself at some point but will now go in eyes open. That was way more informative than any youtube video or magazine review.

@SToronto You may be right about the 991 GT3. I have a lot of time to drive and decide on that third car as my timeline is likely 5-10 years. Need a bigger garage first. Track is not a big component of wheel time at this point in my life, but I am hoping to grow in to it in the future.

That’s really the best thing to do - see for yourself. Depending on your roads, the GT4 may work better for you than it did for me.
