And even if it winds up needing $50k in repairs (I think that’s very unlikely), I think it’s still worth the money compared to Porsches, given how good the driving experience is.
they are great value. I’d love a 620R or 600LT at some point

For people like me. Driving the car every day more under the radar without massive hardware out the back. Then 2-4 track visits a year with a fantastic suspension setup.

We just sold our 765 for over MSRP after 16 months and multiple track days. I wouldn't call that tanking.

We did take a bath on the 675 though.

The fairy dust of the R is the experience of driving it, the unique handling, the special noises, the vibrations, etc. Amazing that Porsche allows keyboard warriors here to review the ST first before everyone else.

Thing about the fairy dust is that they can engineer it into any 911, it's not difficult or costly for them to do it. I think they could easily do it on the less expensive 911s, but choose to save it for the more expensive ones so that they can maximize overall profit.

They don't have a choice and thankfully anyone can say whatever they want.

Exactly right. The R on paper shouldn't be as special as it is...but anyone that's driven one knows it. It's just different than any other 911 I've driven. Many times the intangibles make the driving experience.

Amazing how many opinions there are on whether or not the S/T is "special" when no one here has driven or experienced the car.

EDIT: The emotional response this car is getting already, from both ends of the spectrum, is very interesting to say the least.

The whole is often greater than the sum of its parts. I may put myself here but I founded a few companies and have backed entrepreneurs very early (pre product) and some have gone in to build colonies worth hundreds of billions in value (yes hundreds of Billions). It’s qualitative and in almost every scenario people said the quantitative elements don’t add up/the tech isn’t special/ it’s just another search engine company (Google re Yahoo) or another social company (Facebook re MySpace). Like justaroofer, they miss the qualitative depth of the experience and won’t have the opportunity to appreciate the satisfaction of something special. FWIW, I did a few years of roofing humping 100 plus pound bundles of asphalt tiles up three stories on a ladder so I get the struggle.

Net is I’m fortunate to be able to drive the F outta some amazing cars. My CGTs are and will
always be more special and fulfilling and MORE than my 918. Before and during and after. On paper, the 9-8 is much more everything. And the CGT just a cobbled
together parts from a failed racing program. Nothing in or about it says Porsche (other than the 996 steering wheel and Boxster styling) but ….

Some people gets their panties in a bunch when not everyone agreed wit their liking of a car, or stating the obvious about a certain car. Relax guys, it's just.........a car, not like someone is talking crap about your wife or something.

For those that do like the ST, it will be another great car from Porsche. They really haven't had a "not great" car since like the 914 days. Being a marketing driven car doesn't equate to it not being great.

Perhaps it will take time for the taste of it to mature for some. Not unlike the 911R. I had one, I wasn't impressed with one. But with it becoming the base for the GT3 Touring and now the ST, it became the OG car and my appreciation for it also grow. While I had sold it, I still have access to my old car which I can buy back at any point in time, that point has becoming closer after seeing what the ST is.

It is obvious that you have a unique taste in what you want out of a Porsche, and that taste is different than the majority. That's what makes the brand special, they have cars for you, cars for me, and cars for just about everyone else who can afford them.

What I continue to point out in this thread is the highly charged emotional responses. The S/T thread is unlike any other thread about a specific car I have ever seen on RL. The passion in here from the "haters" is unlike anything I've witnessed. This negative passion far exceeds the positive passion from those who are excited for it. It's like they've made it their mission to convince others the S/T ain't sh*t, or it's all marketing, because they don't like it and/or can't get it. I'm interested in the car, that's why I continue to frequent this thread. If I didn't like a car, I'd go to the next thread.

Some people get their panties in a bunch when Porsche didn't consult them to make the car they precisely wanted at the price they wanted, then continue to type over and over and OVER again on the topic. Relax guys, it's just a car. You DON'T have to like it or comment that you don't like it. One yes sir will do. We don't need a sir yes sir yes sir yes.

The amount that someone doesn't like something is probably roughly proportional to how often they say they don't like it.

And the more people defend the car, the price, the marketing, Porsche, etc., the more reaction there will probably be to complain about those things.

We could just all accept that the car is quite polarizing for various reasons, and that in itself tells us some things.

I guess you haven't heard of the Carrera T? Just as polarizing between those who think "it's just a base with a manual" or "a parts bin special" and those like me who understand it's a special car because the sum of its parts make it so. It follows the 3.2 Clubsport recipe to a, well, T, just like the ST follows the R recipe to a T but is designated differently presumably to avoid devaluing its predecessor.

While on the subject of price and value, people paid a 50% premium for the 911R over the GT3 and that worked out well for them. The ST premium over the GT3 is about 75%, which seems completely reasonable and conservative considering we're now living in the age of big ADMs. Porsche is not stupid. The car is priced well and redirects some of the ADM profit to the party that actually earns it. You know, for those still making the argument that it's too expensive. I sincerely doubt any ST will go unsold.
