Not looking forward to the sad posts for those that sell, pocket the extra 5 grand, can't find a replacement and soon regret the sale.

I don't think it's just the magical 991.1, even though its engine farts unicorn tears.
I was in the market for an Audi RS3 for over a year, and prices have gone up tremendously, from mid 40s to low-mid 50s for like model year, options, and mileage. Inventory is very low and buyers are particular for the RS3, so I think it's a decent comparison.
E36 and E92 M3s look to be the same. Also enthusiast cars with relatively low inventory.
Maybe it's just a bad time to buy a used car?

I agree the 991.2 lacks sound but it also lacks the proper power delivery. Example, with the 991.2 you get peak torque down low which really messes with the driving experience. The beauty of the naturally aspirated 991's is power and torque increase as the rpms increases which gives it a more gt3 power delivery experience. This is just my friendly opinion having owned both.

You would have thought with a global pandemic that prices would have dropped. I am into watches and since the pandemic watch prices have also gone crazy on zRolex, Patel and AP and a huge shortage. The old supply and demand and glad we keep looking and buying and thankful we can.

Let's face it, Porsche has become a much wider product based mfg nowadays and sells a boatload of suv's and 4 doors. The old sports car mfg seems less interested in selling a bunch of sports cars, and more into a wider array of vehicles. Translated maybe they want the 911's to become more scarce and create demand.

Lots of people also discovered they did not have to or want to live in cities, and live without cars.

From the moment I began looking in late 2019, I detected the prices creeping up. By the time I purchased in Sept 2020, the prices were $10-15k more than when I started. I was looking for a nicely optioned very low mile (<10k) manual C2S in Miami Blue. The manual transmission requirement proved to be the Achilles heel. Fewer and fewer I could find with all the other specs I wanted and the mileage was beginning to increase. Manual on a used 911 will cost you more ($3-5k) than an equal pdk. I came close on a few but I took too long to commit due to deliberating over price (I couldn’t rationalize spending $5-10k more than what I had seen them for the previous year). Two of them got sold out from under me as I was finally breaking down to buy. I eventually found my dream car in a different color that quickly grew on me and I paid more for it than I ever thought I would spend. Then I full body PPFd and Fidelity Platinum Warrantied it (another $10k). So moral of story, if you snooze you will lose. Don’t sweat $5k for the car you want because o. These cars you can blow $5-10k in the blink of an eye. The biggest driver to prices going down will be mileage. It would have cost me $50k+ more to get into a 992 with comparable options.
Also, My father in law who sold cars for many years told me something that will stick with me forever... “A GREAT price on the WRONG car is NOT a good deal”.
Don’t set out on getting a great deal. If you find the perfect/right car, be ready to swallow your pride and buy it. Once you get behind the wheel of it you’ll quickly forget about the 5% premium you paid to get it.

Sorry, friend, I think I bought the car you were searching for. I picked up this 991.2 Miami Blue, manual , with 18k miles in early October 2020. I negotiated down to, what I thought was very reasonable, 79k. It has full leather...everything with deviated yellow stitching and is a CPO. I know market is inflated, but pricing on this car didn't seem high to me, with all the options. Best of all, the car was 35 miles from my home.
I started out thinking I had to have a 16 4s, manual and after driving this car, I bought it on the spot. I can say that Porsche Marin is a good selling dealer. They are honorable and even followed up with replacing the left headlight that had microfractures, that someone attempted to remove leaving swirl marks. They said they would take care of it, even if Porsche didn't.
I'm glad I didn't deliberate longer than a few minutes, another guy showed up just after I committed. He said he had missed several cars by just a few minutes.
I agree, there's more to getting a great deal. If the dealer sucks, if the car is a compromise, you'll sell it off in short order and lose TTL anyway.
Good luck.
