A few weeks ago, Porsche gathered all the instructors together in Germany. They brought a bunch of GT3 4.0s for them to drive. But they also bought a 488, AMG GT R and a 570s. At the end of the day he Porsche engineers asked the instructors to objectively rate the cars. The result:
1. GT3...best overall
2. AMG GTR.. very, very close to GT3...best sound
3. 488...best engine.
4. 570s...best nothing

The 570S was a long last because it did not last the day. kept over heating so they had to park it.

All cars were compared back to back.

They also had a GT3RS there for comparison. GT3 was faster.
The maccas seem to have a knack for overheating...they say anything else about the 488?

And quite confident if Mercedes gathered all the instructors the AMG would have been first and so on.

Even so, the instructors are not puppy dogs. Never met one who did not have a strong opinion. The Porsche engineers wanted their hard-nosed, objective feedback and asked them to rate the cars on a range of criteria. The AMG beat the GT3 on a number of these.

A good outcome for the GTR, less so for the 570S.

Sounds like it was their marketing dept, not their instructors.

570 is their biggest competitor. Only car with a carbon tub, next level of car for same price as a decently optioned 911.

Noo, the AMG is Porsche GT cars biggest competition right now(just the GTR, Black Series should be pretty special too). Maybe the next generation of the 570 will be better but the current one suffers from horrible understeer and heat soak real fast when tracked. Also, a well spec'd 570 will be around $230ish.

What about the R8/Huracan family? Anything there competitive with GT3 or RS? Prices are pretty close.

I was just commenting about the 4 cars that were spoken about. There are others, higher priced or lower priced higher HP, but the GT3 was the one being compared to the other 3, and in that price range(under 200k) there aren't many to compete with it besides the AMG GTR. The handful in the next price bracket, looks like the .2 GT3 handles itself pretty well against them, R8 plus is more of a canyon carver than a track car, C7 ZO6 is fast but suffers from heat soak also, ACR is badass, Huracan(performante is crazy fast on track) is fast but much more money like the 488, which is a total disappointment on the track for the specs, they both are in the RS territory price wise. Anyway, I was talking about the 4, they're the ones that were spoken about.

What if AMG instead of Porsche would have invited the instructors?

Agree on 570s crap toy and 488 best turbo on the 250kish market

what I really love is that AMG is setting up meetings once a month with owners on the PL forum to ask any and all questions....goes a long way.

570 doesn't just compete with the GT cars, but the Turbos as well. Any 911 that can be optioned up, really, but in particular the Turbo. The Turbo cars have always been a big cash cow for Porsche, which historically didn't have much competition in its segment until recently.

You can definitely go pretty nuts on options with McLaren, before you even touch MSO. But all considered, a 570 comes pretty well-equipped even if you tick no boxes (same with Merc). A GT3, by comparison, still comes with plastic interior unless you tick the leather box, pretty hard pressed to not add at least 10-20k of options.

IMO nobody has started taking Mercedes seriously yet. On paper I'd agree, GTR is probably the best GT3 fighter, but Merc is still in their niche, not really threatening Porsche, selling to the same buyers they've always targeted. Mac on the other hand is going after every buyer they can. Perhaps when Merc builds a real lightweight car like Porsche, it'll be a different story.

200kg / 441 lbs is the number what a MB GTR is heavier than a 991 GT3 RS.

i´m already getting a bit frustrated if i have to drive with a 100kg budy on the codriver seat in the RS.

why they (M and AMG) are so comfy to not create a stripped out car. the buyers would be there.
the BlackSeries of the GTR will loose what? another 16kg - as the GTR is less than the GTS?
they have to enter the low 1.400kg range - and not be happy if they are not 1.700kg.

a pity - that there is only one group of people making the rules in the game between MB and BMW head companies against AMG and M.
i know a couple of really good guys within M in Garching - if they would be allowed to earn below 40k on one such "GT car" they could create beautiful things. for sure same at AMG in Affalterbach.

...

But my feeling is that AMG will go this way - and will become more and more attractive. Against M and also against P.
