I think in all of this back and forth about tires, we're losing sight of the elephant in the room.
Are the tires the only reason the AMG GT R lapped the 'Ring in 7:10.92?
Or in other words, are there any tires in the world that would allow the 991 GT3 RS to match (or beat) that time? Short of slicks? Are there even any tires that would maybe shave 4-5 seconds off the GT3 RS time of 7:20?

But to your last point - no doubt. Hoosiers, for example, are over 2 seconds per minute faster than N0 MPSC2. On a 7:20 lap, that's over 15 seconds from just tires. It's just a very long lap.

7.10 from GT R is Indeed because nobody can afford for a GT3RS the Hoosiers,
to get even close to 7.10 Ring lap time right?
we need to wait for performance and price wise apples with apples comparison
that's GT2 RS vs GT R Black series
so far in 2017 AMG GT R is for price/ performance a bargain as Porsche GT3 was in 2013
Well done AMG that will push P Mc F to stop that crazy price vs contents rising delta
due to an artificial "perceived value" marketing
i prefer contents in a sport track car over hairdressers Cxx options exclusivity gadgets
(or perceived image value - hidden tax)
Wasn't Porsche 911 baseline a fantastic enjoyable unbeatable Gran Tourer car
and that, in GT3 variants, could easily beat on track the expensive F cars costing100k more ?
Porsche left a market and now AMG has that price/perfomarce
Ferrari Mclaren worst nightmare track weapon

Maybe a repost.
It's too heavy at 38xx lbs but seems like an impresssive fun car.
Hopefully for the black series they lighten it up becuse I don't see a reason for it to be this heavy. Reduce weight, follow BMW's Clubsport in a box for sale in the us and it may be a serious GT2RS competitor.
About tires; Nitto NT-01 - Toyo RA1 are as fast or a bit faster if shaved then the MPSC2.
Hoosier R7 are at least 1 second per minute faster, or about 2-3 seconds a Sebring.
Slicks are another 2-3 seconds faster. These are pretty solid proven numbers on 997's at Sebring.
Maybe a repost.

Maybe that big weight number is derived from one of those Euro specs that includes driver and luggage???

One more piece of good news on the weight issue. That 7:10 Ring time is posted with the weight of the car at 1,554kg which is roughly 3,426 pounds. Euro spec is likely lighter than US spec, so hopefully the US car does weigh under 3,600...
http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/nordschleife
Automobilie Mag lists the weight as 3,428 pounds (probably the Euro Spec though):

We probably need to get a US spec R on scales to know for sure...

^ Heavier than Porsche, but not too bad, and not a dealbreaker for me.
If this car proves durable on the track with operating costs not way higher than the Porsches, I'm definitely interested, especially if I can get one a year or so old with substantial depreciation.

According to Porsche website, the Euro spec Turbo S weighs 1,600kg (3,527 pounds) compared to 1,554kg (3,426 pounds) for the GT R - so the Turbo S should weigh 100 pounds more than AMG (assuming both companies lie equally about weight).
