This is best thread on the internet. I have been following along for a long time and taking notes. There are lots of great garages and ideas here that I am trying to implement into our current house plans. I have less of an interest in the house than I do in making sure the garage is laid out right. I think the wife finally has accepted that. I have a question about jackshaft garage door openers.
The Liftmaster 8500 jackshaft opener is rated for max width of 18’ and max height of 14’, max sq footage of 180 sqft. Has anyone used this on a larger sized door and if so any issues? I have two 20’ wide by 8’ high doors going in. Curious if I should move up to the Liftmaster MJ which is their medium duty jackshaft opener. Anyone here have a Liftmaster MJ and if so what features is it missing compared to the 8500?
Thanks

It's a four post lift from Bendpak HD9ST painted white. It is not bolted down.

I can’t complain too much as I’m thankful to have a garage!

I have the medium duty liftmaster for my 20x8 door that weighs 700 lbs according to my contractor. Biggest difference vs the residential door opener, which I also have, is the lack of a soft close feature for the last few inches before the door touches the ground (when closing). My 20x8 door with that medium duty opener closes with a small thud. I had the contractor use a different sized sprocket to lessen the speed and thus the thud - nevertheless it’s still noticeable. I do not know if there are medium duty openers that have a soft close feature.

Thank you sir for the reply. I know Liftmaster gives a max limits for “Width”, “Height” OR “Weight”. If any of the three are surpassed they recommend upgrading. I don’t think my doors will break the weight limit but apparently that doesn’t matter as the width is too much. I wouldn’t care as much about the soft close capability being lost as much as the wifi access capability being sacrificed. By my understanding the medium grade openers do not have Wi-Fi pairing/remote access, is that correct? My wife leaves the garage doors open all too frequently for me too be without remote closure access.
