918 Spyder VIP's get first crack at the entire allocation pool that PCNA is awarded from PAG. That, in turn, reduces the amount of allocations available to non-VIP's, which then end up getting dished out to dealers in the ratios they would've originally been distributed in.
Some dealers that would've gotten 2 allocs of a GT3 RS, for instance, ended up getting zero after the 918 VIP's raised their hands.
Unlike some other companies (Ferrari), VIP allocations are not fabricated, they're stolen from the regular pool.

Also, for the record, the 918 Spyder VIP program isn't, technically, there to reward Porsche fans who drop $1 million on a car. It was created by PCNA when sales of the 918 Spyder were slumping dramatically. The outcome is positive for 918 Spyder buyers, but it wasn't created with the intent of caring and rewarding them.
I agree that it's important to care for, and reward, the people who buy Porsche's $1m 918 Spyder... but it's also important to care for, and reward, the people who've owned a 959, 964 Turbo S, 993 Turbo S, 997 GT3 RS, 997 GT3 RS 4.0, 997 GT2 RS, etc., etc.

Seems like most of us agree that the VIP program blows. Obviously some new guys to the board that have just been posting for 1-2 years and bought a 918 love the program, shocker ! Overall I find it really unfortunate that modern limited edition p cars are not mostly commodity products being bought for profit. Most of the fun to stick with the P car brand over Ferrari for me has been the lack of all these games till recently.

Guys the 918 program is just a way PAG is refunding the 918 owners for
the too many 918 recalls some either very dangerous for driver safety
how to blame ? they opened a refund campaign with RS over MSRP price paid
directly to 918 ppl by regular 911 buyers... this seems to continue with R and who knows next models
If this is not idiot is at least masochistic for PAG

Sadly, there's no easy solution. While it would be nice to, say, reserve a number of cars for non-VIP customers, that simply isn't possible under the terms of the current VIP program. Porsche created the program, probably underestimating the ripple effect on future car allocations, particularly those offered in limited numbers, and the ripple effect on non-VIP long-standing Porsche customers. Ultimately it was their call and they have made a decision which unfortunately has had the unintended consequence of alienating some of its best (but non 918) customers it seems. Blame PCNA or whomever. They own this.
I certainly don't begrudge the 918 owners. They did not wish ill on anyone, but neither are they stupid to leave a great deal on the table now that it is working to their advantage. I suspect Porsche will not offer this deal again though.
Congratulations to anyone who is able to secure one of these scarce cars, RS or R or whatever comes down the pipe. Does the program extend to when the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Carrera RS happens (if such a car actually comes)? That might be the final grand parting gift to 918 customers.

I concur. A lot of 918 buyers in the US (I can't speak for other markets) aren't necessarily die hard Porsche buyers / collectors, but are folks who tend to buy the latest hypercar that they can get their hands on (and believe me, it was pretty easy to get your hands on a 918 Spyder allocation back in the day). These buyers choose to simply consume their VIP allocations for rare 911's, and then either flip them (which I have yet to see PCNA do anything about), or toss them right back at their dealer, who in turn marks them up dramatically (Auto Gallery in LA does this a lot).
In retrospect, I should've bought one or two 918's when I had the chance. The car and I just didn't get along (I put a lot of miles on a demo on the street, and at the Thermal Club), and I don't believe in buying, or collecting, something I'll never want to drive just for the sole purpose of becoming a VIP.
Over the years, I've purchased ~20 Porsches, and yet I'm not a VIP. Some random person who might've never purchased a Porsche before buys a 918 Spyder, and they're suddenly a VIP? That's unfortunate. I spent more than $1 million on brand new Porsches. And I'm pretty sure the profits PCNA and PAG have made on me are greater than a single 918 Spyder sale.
Ironically, with Ferrari, you have to already be a VIP (i.e., you've purchased a bunch of Ferrari's) in order to qualify to buy LaFerrari... with Porsche, you simply had to buy the 918 Spyder, and now you can buy everything else as a VIP. It's a bit backward.
Am I slightly bitter? Yes. I absolutely am. I should've grabbed at least one 918 Spyder new -- but it would've been going against my beliefs of what I should be spending money on.

That seems awfully low. What are you hearing for global numbers? I would have expected half to come to the US. But most of the rumours are for around 500-900 cars world wide, and 120 is a paltry fraction of that.
