Test fitted the new wheels. As expected, a thin spacer will be needed for the rear...

@The Duke they're WORK Brombacher wheels. 19x9 et46, 19x11 et46. Running an 11" rear on these cars is not too aggressive, but offset does need to be around +40 or lower to avoid hitting the inside edge on the shock. Brombacher is a classic mesh design created by WORK specifically for European vehicles.

I've been wanting to get some true, fully forged 3-piece wheels as a street setup. If you're not familiar with WORK they're 100% made from start to finish in Japan always built to order. They're more or less the BBS of Japan. Been around for 40+ years. Honestly these are MUCH higher quality than the 18" BBS LM I'm running on my 986 Boxster. Edit.....Love them, great looking wheel

*although not sure I'd agree on the quality statement about the LMs. LM's are a great wheel, any BBS wheel is hard to beat.

FWIW, I had Work Brombacher wheels on my Cayman when I bought it. Offsets were fronts +51 (8.5"), and rears were +38 (10"). Look forward to pictures after you get them mounted.

Thanks for the link - I will look into them. New 19" wheels are on my rapidly growing list. I will have to wait until next year.

BBS of Japan?

That reminds me - about 19 years ago, I bought a Mini Cooper S and added BBS RGR wheels - this was a forged wheel made in Japan.

@The Duke yeah those RGR wheels were great. I almost bought a set of the 2-piece version (RS-GT) for my VW GTI back in the mid-2000's. There is a "BBS of Japan" ...probably should have phrased it as Work is to Japan as BBS is to Germany. Both are great wheel companies with good reputation and extensive histories.

I'd looked about a year ago to have an R50/R53 as a cheap beater, but the anything semi-nice seems to have moved into the realm of a modern classic from a price perspective. How was yours in term of reliability?

@Zach L It was absolutely go-cart like in its handling, and I did lots of stupid things while driving it.

However, it was also the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

I had five windshields - all replaced for free - by the dealer over my 7 years of ownership.

Door and hood release cables stretched and required replacement, the AC compressor died, window regulator broke, etc., etc.

BTW, I'm looking at a June 2003 back issue of Excellence. A BBS ad announces the "new BBS RS-GT"! I'm re-reading it because it features a very nice article by Ian Kuah on the 996 GT3 - "US Bound"!

I was deep into VWs for much of the 90s. My last was a 90 GLI - 268 degree Schrick cams, Techtonics ported and polished head, balanced and blueprinted block. A real screamer! I'd post a pic, but the above was enough within this thread. :-)

Been down the Mini road as well, but VW was my 1st love! Rebuilt this 91 GTI to 300hp 2.0 turbo with a 6-speed manual swap. Kind of bummed I sold it, but enjoying my 987 just as much these days.

Holy crap, that price is ridiculous. I sold mine for a small fraction of that with similar miles/condition, although it was a resto-mod. I bough it for around $2k in 2005ish. Paying 40k+ for a MK2 is absolute insanity. They are fun, but nowhere near that kind of fun money!

Nice Mk2s! Love those 1552 Snowflakes on the Tornado Red. I believe those are ATS or Borbets on the Jetta?

Natural progression for me was VW--Audi--Porsche. I daily drove a '93 Corrado VR6 for almost 4 years in late high school and most of college... first car I brought to the track too. Never had a Mk2, but ended up with a Mk1 Diesel, Mk1 Cabrio, Mk3 Ginster VR6, Mk5 GTI. I've put about 400,000 miles on Volkswagens including over 220,000 on the Mk5 GTI in less than 10 years. Currently the only VWs I own are a '72 Bus and Mk3 4-door Golf, both of which are currently not running lol

One of the things I've noticed after being in the Porsche world for over 4 years now is that many of us that came up from the VW world generally tend to be tinkerers and DIY'ers ...folks that can turn a wrench and tend to mechanically know their way around their Porsche, which I appreciate.

In the 90s, the Corado VR6 was one of the cars that I - and many others - lusted over.

I can't tell you the amount of work I did on my car. Within 2-3 years, I replaced or upgraded virtually every part on it.

Armed with my MK2 Bentley, it was how I learned to work on cars.

100% - I actually started out with a lifted Chevy truck, then mini-truck (on bags) in high school. Then got into VWs late in college, definitely had my fare share: bought a 2002 GTi senior year of college, that was a many year project (still own) then an mk1 gti (DD, then sold), mk4 r32 (DD, then turbo, recently sold to buy CS), still have an R32 shell dressed up as a 337, an mk1 GTi that I need to get on the project list...Also have had an B5 Audi A4 Avant and B6 S4 Avant, that was a great car!

Since a few others have shown some old rides, here is my 2002 GTi that was/is my long term project car, this is the 3rd iteration of it, here it was an all wheel drive, compound turbo diesel making ~300awhp, unknown torque, but was certainly quick.
