I've been pretty successful with soapy water to slip the boots into place, along with dental picks to move them around. Maybe some dish soap residue after it all dries up, but I've never heard of that causing any problems with the rubber.

Goughary, let me know when you start buying buckets of cosmoline and I'll be right over. I want my undercarriage parts to look that pretty. Few things are more frustrating than corroded bolts. These "never seen rain" cars deserve a price premium (and then be sprayed in sealant and driven!).

Tomato- The steering rack is decently protected behind the underbody cover and subframe laterals. I wouldn't sweat a small tear too much but they can grow quickly. There's no real fix besides replacement. I can't remember if you can spin off a central toe adjuster completely without disconnecting anything else, but that's all that is needed to pull the boot off and replace. It will require an alignment.

Regarding boots: Perhaps there is an argument for buying steering and cv boots directly through Porsche? My Porsche steering boots are doing fine, my pelican cv boots are all either torn or dry rotting after only ~15k miles. I'm really not excited about doing that job again...

18T- I believe the fellow is changing wheels.

It looks like that car has OEM D90 wheels, so it shouldn't be a problem?
Any other reason to install these?
18T BT, that's my car and I swapping the D90s for 18" BBS, hence the need to install the steering stops.

Nick...feel free to bring the axles down if you need a hand w boots...or bring the car and we can pull the axles...

On a side note. Yes the pelican gkn boots suck, but they don't cost much.

The boots cv of Ocala used on mikes axles look very good quality and if you need a proper axle rebuild, that's not a bad way to go. They did a fantastic job.

I think ,btw, between Butzi gear and his shop and services and we with our little hovel of a shop in Fairfield, if there is anyone on this thread that is within a few hours of us and needs work, you would be nuts to go anywhere else. Dave is a great guy and his shop and services are awesome. I had gotten the impression he was "the" BBS source for oem and custom bbs, but beyond the parts and customization, he offers full shop services and expertise. Very cool to have him in the neighborhood. And if his phone isn't ringing off the hook after you read this ... then you aren't listening....stop paying too much at a shop that doesn't care about you beyond the check you are writing....go call butzigear.

I remember my fight with those steering rack boots. If i recall correctly, I just turned the wheel to let the boot be compressed a bit and it made it easier to slip on. Not much help I know, but its a little something.

On another note, thought you might like this guys channel, he reminds me of you.

And then...on another note, since I haven't touched a Porsche other than driving all day in mine...

Remember waaaaaaay back, during another side-note pause, I posted a sir tools order that I made for a special tool that's a very long 8mm Allen specifically to get up through the heat exchangers to get to the Allen nuts up there...so those nuts typically seize and this tool was supposed to be robust and its heavy so that it can't twist and should have no problem cracking those nuts loose.

Well, I'm working on a C2 at the moment, and the axle bolts on a C2 are 8mm, unlike the wimpy c4 axle bolts....which are 6mm or whatever equivalent xzn bolt size that is...

So I figured the special uber long super tough so it won't twist and therefore can crack those bolts w no issue Allen socket would do the trick.
Thank god I didn't use it on my heat exchangers.

Do not buy this tool. You will see them commonly offered on eBay.

You are a glutton for punishment as you own a 964 and a 2.7TT and an allroad to boot.

The allroad is a 4.2 V8. Just sayin.

It's now fixed and starts well. Back the to C2...

But...before that, had a visit from our first suspension madness car today. We installed the 55mm bull nose studs
