I have to admit that was not on my radar but the buyer way overpaid. No doubt that car had many more miles a full respray and not even a good one and I see no mention of anything special in the build. Every line item was overcharged by the shop and this could have easily been built for a lot less and a far better build to boot. Appears to be slip in 3.8 which will gain very little and something I would never do. At least for the tire size they should have mounted MPS4S's instead of PS2's. The only winner there was Makellos Classics they charged $70k for a so so build. Insanity is all I can think of.

The 9M car was a bargain in comparison and this car is not even in the same category.

The 9m car on pcarmarket sold for a very low price, but I think it just reflects that a lot of buyers in the know just won't deal with pcarmarket. The one on BAT sold much higher, though I didn't think it was as nice. But I agree with you that both cars were a better deal than this white rebuild.

The BAT car price was crazy. Wondering how I can sell my nearly identical build without having to list it.

That one has been for sale for years at Gaudin, I've always wondered what happened to the red airbag...

I've been looking at it on different listings online with the same photos for at least 4 years. For that price I would also want the steering wheel intact with its red airbag lid and other things. I like my narrow body 964s unless a special color like @cobalt comes along on a 965, then we can talk. Until then..

I don’t know if it’s a combination of naive buyers and current economic circumstances or just plain old ignorance but some of the late prices we have seen for 964 sub par examples simply make no sense.

Maybe FOMO and rarity of ‘92-‘94 also.

I’m buying a 996 GT3 currently, and I’ll admit, there is some FOMO. It looks like GT3s will soon be like 965s, $100k+ for any car regardless of history. So getting in now while I can, but also nervous about a bursting bubble.

It’s actually a very similar situation to my 964: buying a track car that has had some repairs that I can drive and track guilt free, and can easily make a great street car when it’s days are done on the track. And also like my 964, I’m paying a little extra now to ensure I get it and a little nervous I’m buying at the top of the market, but also like my 964, it may not matter in a couple years because of appreciation.

i don't get it either really, but that's the market. keep in mind, sidsail has spent $298k on 3 cars in the last 2 months on BaT. check his profile - he bought the 12k red car, this white one, and a $90k G50 (too much in my mind again) but the market will likely come to him. i was in briefly and had $70k as an early ceiling. at $60k, sidsail outbid me by $25k!!!! absolutely insane strategy, but it still wasn't enough. i thought it would be for sure. paint work, 71k miles, standard blue interior... i was shocked.

For me the real danger in this kind of market is thinking - "oh I can spend more on my car and get it back if I ever sell". That is the slippery slope I try to avoid. You wouldn't have to look too far to find people who would recommend ways to invest $25 - $50k or more in my car to make it "right". $20k for a simple (non special) engine rebuild, $20k for a full body restoration (assuming no hidden issues), $10k for the interior, $5k for wheels and tires, $10K for the suspension. That's $65,000 without getting anything "special". I'm not saying it can't be done for much less but there are plenty of shops out there that would quote these numbers and more for basic work. If you start with a $40k car - you surpass $100,000 invested without too much trouble. Now try to find a $40k 964 and you start to see why guys will pay $100,000 for a decent car.

Jpoint—if I’m spending $100k on a 964, I’d rather find the $40k car and have the work you listed done right than spend $100k on a car that’s going to need some of the work done soon anyway.
