I find it hard to believe that the miles are accurate if it was driven to this event and just 20 miles added. I go to most car shows and put at least 40 miles on my car minimum round trip usually closer to 60 or 100. Cosmoline is sprayed on and each car is different but back then it appears the hoses to the oil tank had been replaced already and there is some sand blasting of the cosmoline which makes me think miles are more than stated. Although I don't think by much.

My mint green car still has the factory cosmoline everywhere underneath. Engine tray is still on, took it off to inspect and was surprised to see all that.

This car was on display just outside of a building housing the Road Scholar's collection, so moved about 50 feet. At the time, Road Scholars also had a couple other 964s (Speedsters) with less than 100 miles.

That makes more sense then. Quite a shame it wasn't appreciated as a driver but someone who collects will love this in their own way.

I get that you wanted to test drive for a DDer,.. so my situation is not exactly the same as what you were looking for,... but

I felt the same way about regular 997's, and also even the 2016 991.1 GTS NA manual that I test drove too (thinking that might be a cool car to own). But after 15 yrs of 964 Turbo love,... my wife & I wanted to get a newer water-cooled car to experience something else that would compliment the 964T. We ended up in a 997.2 GT3, and HOLY SHISTERS, that car is good. ~600 lbs lighter than even the 997.2 Turbo too,.. and with PCCB's (lower unsprung weight), it has been the perfect compliment.

So in the end, my point is that it really depends on EXACTLY which variant you choose to "test drive" to compare against the 964. There are plenty of choices out there,.. and some of them are just aaaammmmmaaaaaazzzzzzinngggg.

Does anyone know if the cosmoline was applied right at the factory or if it was applied at the shipping port? I’m curious if all 964’s had cosmoline or if it was limited to the cars shipped overseas.

Your Owner's Manual implies that all cars received the cosmoline treatment because it stresses that it should be inspected annually and repaired as needed. Could it be that US manuals only had that statement--maybe so.

Oh well. My '92 C2 still has some here and there on the bottom and in the wheel wells. I remember removing it on 70's and 80's 911s for Concours prep. Too much work for me now and nobody will see it anyway.

That is a good question. I was always told it was done at the ports but don't hold me to it. I do know you can opt out of having cosmoline applied but would need to foot the bill to have the car flown overseas. AFAIK it was only applied to cars that were shipped overseas. IMO Nasty stuff that just collects dirt and makes a mess of everything.

I must have missed that comment I don't ever recall reading it in the manual. I will need to check that out. I removed mine for Concours events. Don't see the need but I don't winter drive my cars.

I'm glad to hear you say this. A driver 997 GT3 was at the top of my list to go alongside the 964 (and keep my current daily), but after being so disappointed by the 997S, I was wondering if the GT3 at twice the price could really be worth it. I guess I’ll keep it up there until I get a chance to drive one and can form an actual opinion.

GT3 is a completely different 997 experience, and the one to get if you want a raw driving pleasure in a more modern 911 platform.
A 997 GT3 and hot rodded 964 actually complement each other very well, with the 964 being a lot slower but surprisingly similar feeling.
Drove my dad's 997S over the weekend, and though a great car, I couldn't wait to switch keys and just back into the 964.

indeed, indeed. Blessed to have a wife of 30yrs who enjoys these cars too (our 30yr anniversary this year,.... not how old she is..... geez guys!!) Lol. ..... It's kinda nice to be at the point where our kids are finally out of college & on their own financially. These are our empty nest years!!

We're taking the GT3 to Summit Point this Saturday,.. and the 964 Turbo for an all-day excursion tour-drive on Sunday. Both are clean, running well, & ready to go. This work week CAN'T go by fast enough!!
