If that car has been registered in and carries a CA plate /title i'd hit it 50k as it's represented.
The japanese take insane care of their sports cars. it will need stuff but I will bet its as good as represented.

If this car has not and is not titled in CA, GOOD LUCK getting it titled here. FL or MT or WY should be no problem.

You think there would be SMOG issues or something?

Yep. California is a major PITA on this topic. When you bring a car from out of state to register in CA, they look for the emissions compliance sticker. At this time I believe they were 50 state cars, inclusive of CA (some makers are not, and had 49 state and CA cars) If this car was a Japanese or European import, it will not have one. if it has been US registered, you're going to need to get it tested and certified by CARB. If it's not been US registered, you're going to need a bunch of other forms.

Brian do you know where this car is titled?

This post has some interesting information on the issues:

Bottom line: Can maybe be done, expensive, and definitely not worth hassle for a $50k car. $1mm car... sure.

According to the auctioneers, it was originally registered in IL before going to Japan. Currently registered in IL as well. Does that mean it's easy to register in CA?

Not entirely accurate.

is this a US car? If it's not, then nope. Not unless it has a us epa emissions sticker. It looks like you can register a 911 from this generation imported in the us. And IL has easier process, However California is most likely not going to allow you to register it since it will not be certified to meet emissions (unless it has the emissions sticker). You could submit it to carb for testing....

You all know the CA rules and regs better than I, but I would swear people are importing 25+ year old cars into the U.S. and getting them registered in CA. The 70-Series Land Cruiser is one that I thought I heard people are doing. How does that work versus this? Don't intend to de-rail the thread, just curious...

Thanks !

This site has a good summary of the issues. Again, it may be able to be done, you can get a title most likely, getting it REGISTERED for use on roads in CA... that's where CARB comes in. Maybe it can be done. Wasting the time on a car like this where you can find US legal examples in as nice condition (maybe more $ yes) doesn't seem worth it. Now were this a 3.8RS... :-)

should be good to go, if it was originally a US car.
assuming that it was exported/re-imported to the USA correctly.

Agreed, that was my question, but it seems to indicate an imported car, registered in US, then exported, then imported.

If it's a US car with US stickers / reg / cert then you should be OK to register in CA.

Here's another question for you 964 experts: what's the deal with the 1990 (and other?) 964's with "49 state emissions" on the sticker? Does that mean it would be difficult to get said car SMOG/CARB in CA?
