Im happy to report that all p/c clearances are within a spec based on measurement instructions provided by service manual

Curious, what cyl had the damage?

Is this your own ultrasonic cleaner or a service? I want one...

It was Cylinder 6. Broken head stud, cracked barrel (top to bottom). I am taking it to a shop that has an ultrasonic cleaner. Although it is not big enough to fit the whole half-case it can probably be cleaned in stages by turning the case around.

Polish or grind?

Connecting rod #5 journal. Yes, I can feel it with the finger nail.
The workshop manual doesn't specify how deep the score marks have to be to start grinding but maybe there is someone who dealt with similar wear and knows what to do?

Thanks!
Andrew

Looking good! Did your machinist give you a verdict on the crank?

I am still looking for a suitable machinist. First order of business is to measure case and crank and see how much material I can take off and still be in the spec for standard bearings.

I wouldn't grind the crank unless absolutely necessary, hard to tell from the pics. It is only hardened at the surface, grinding will remove the hardened part. It can most likely be polished out.

Are you planning on doing the assembly yourself?

I rebuilt mine last year. It had a couple of marks exactly like that on the crank, after polishing they couldn't be felt, and the shop said they were fine. Don't remember if you said you had done a 911 motor before, but no matter, it's just an engine. Some people act like it is too complicated for mere mortals, but there is enough reference material info out there to do it right.

Before you order bearings, take a look at this thread where I detailed the problems I had with Glyco bearings, I wouldn't use them under any circumstances.

Thanks, this is great info. Someone here already referenced your thread.

The rebuild doesn't scare me. There is enough literature out there to make sense of every step in the process.

Thanks!

What route did you go with the cams? The ones you took out were pitted?
