1: Started the car and run it at 2.5k rpm for 20 minutes. At first oil pressure was very high but slowly as the engine warmed up it went down. Now at idle (750rpm) is at 1 mark - Good?
2: Initially I filled the engine with 6.5L. The dipstick showed about half between the marks. After the car warmed up and the temperature went to 9 o'clock - I could no longer register any oil on the dipstick. Proceeded to add oil, I am at 12L now and the dipstick just barely registers oil on the very bottom (BTW: this dipstick is incredibly hard to read!) Oil gauge stayed in RED - What's going on?
3: There is a very slight hunt for idle I can only register it by the slight movement of the pressure gauge - Is this OK?

Thanks!

1 bar of pressure hot isn't automatically the end of the world, but is definitely on the low side. Rpm makes a big difference, how quickly does it go up as rpm climbs? What weight oil are you using?
Also, don't depend on any automotive gauge being extremely accurate. Before making any decisions, it needs to be checked with another gauge, ditto with the tachometer.
Oil issue solved. Engine needed 12.8L exactly. Now both the dipstick an gauge reads middle between marks. Pressure reads good too. Just the idle hunt to solve.
I use Scantool freeware on my laptop. I bought the connector cable from Tore at Bergville. Funny thing is that I seem to do adaptations on mostly other people's cars.
Hi all! I've been driving the car for a week now. Did about 100miles, changed the oil once. Overall I'm very happy to be finally enjoying my 964. Even thou I've owned the car for the past 3 years, I'm just now learning all the ins and outs as a driver.
I've been PM-ing Steve Weiner lot's of questions and he has been amazing at guiding me through my random worries. For this last question I wanted to sample a larger enthusiast group.
My oil pressure is somewhat random on cold startup in one very specific situation.
Scenario #1 (normal)
Cold startup in the morning, the pressure shoots to 4 right after startup and during warmup, no load on the engine. After warmup (temperature around 8) the oil pressure slowly settles at 1.5. Driving the car after - the pressure is always around 4 and only going down slightly when stopping at lights and in traffic but it never goes below 1.5 - No oil pressure warning light at all.
Scenario #2 (strange - this happened to me twice)
Starting cold in the morning and immediately moving the car to reposition it in the garage. After stop, engine still cold since it was only driven 15-30 seconds with minimal load, the oil pressure starts behaving randomly: it's up at 4, then drops to 2, then up again, then back to 1 or bit under, then up to 2 again. Never a warning light thou.
It takes a medium throttle blip (3-4k) to get the pressure back to 4 or just waiting 10-15 seconds and it climbs back to 4 by itself and stays there until the engine in operating temperature at which it settles at 1.5 and everything is back to normal as in Scenario#1.
It is worth to mention that the random gauge movement is very rapid, not like when you are driving the car and stoping at lights.
This is only an issue after the car has been sitting overnight. This is not happening when the car is warm, or after a short stop, or even after 8h of underground parking at work.
Things to note:
- All new rubber oil lines
- All new fittings
- New Pressure sender (not Porsche part)
- Cleaned piston squirters (using proper tool)
- Cleaned all oil passages in the case
- Cleaned and inspected pressure relieve valves
- Inspected all crank plugs (all OEM)
Steve W. says it could be an electrical issue. Which is supporting the random and very sudden gauge movement. But, before I dig in to the harness... anyone else had similar experiences? I understand that this particular scenario is very specific, but maybe someone had this happen?
My take on it, other than electrical issue (because not my forte).
On cold startup the oil is making it's way through all the oil passages building up the pressure and driving the car immediately after cold start somehow disturbs the flow or sensor reading? Air bubbles getting in to the oil passages and disrupting reading?
Oil pressure builds almost instantly in an engine that has been recently run. It is a pain to get to, but the easiest thing to do is put the old sensor back in. If it still acts weirdly, perhaps you could borrow an oil pressure gauge and test again.
Another method would be to see about putting a "t" into the pressure port and running a real, accurate mechanical gauge alongside the dash one.
Finally took the car out and about. Drove it very fast and very hard. The air-cooled sound, the raw feel, the refined handling - one of a kind experience!
It has been 3 years and I feel that this thread has reached it's end. It's neither "bitter" or a "beginning" anymore. Enough talk, time to see what this redline on the tachometer is all about
