RS America or Not?

Another tuxedo enters the thread. Thanks for the article, Bob. As I stated earlier, I've kept it handy for almost 10 years. I carried it in my briefcase for years, so it probably has more miles on it than my RSA does.

Here is some more info on the Cup.
http://www.cupcar.net/92cup.htm
The "Cup tub", in additon to the aforementioned seam welds and fender lip rolling also has some brackets deleted for the interior panels, harness mounts added, bracket added for the ABS brain.

Thanks for the interest in my article guys.
Here are photos of an American Cup Edition's seam welding around the rear suspension area. Note the lack of undercoating except that which is added in white goop over the seam welds.Note the stiffening brace added to the stabilizer bar mount. The Euro RS N/GT lightweight has the same. This is the main area of difference between the N/GT lightweight and Touring body shell.

I don't mean to stir anything else up, but can someone explain how (or if) some of the early RSA's ended up with aluminum (lightweight) hoods?
I have seen 2 RSA's with lightweight hoods (that appear to be aluminum) which the current owners state were factory.

Factory maybe, but if they also claimed OEM, that's a new one on me. According to my constant companion (Bob's article), RSAs came with steel hoods, while RSs and Cup USA cars came with aluminum hoods. Many RSAs now have factory parts that were not OEM.

David K.,
I looked at the pix on your site. Very nice car. I noticed one where Oliver Zitzmann was behind you in the bus stop ... did he pass you in the next frame. LOL ... Oliver is the fastest guy I have ever seen in a C2.
Beautiful car!!

Looking back at the start of this tread, I believed that I mentioned I would short a RSA In the market if it was possible. I love the car, heck I regret selling mine. But in my opinion they are just too overpriced right now. Make your own out of a regular 964 that is more powerful, stiffer and lighter then the factory and then pocket the difference.

Be interesting to know what the alloy hood weighs, there is also the saving of the two suspension struts not used with the alloy hood. Also be interesting to know what the steel hood weighs.
The RSA weighed 77 pounds less than the normal C2, the Euro RS weighed 347 pounds less than the normal C2.
The RSA deleted air conditioning, power steering, radio, sunroof, power mirrors, rear seating and the heavier door panels to save weight. In turn weight was added by the rear luggage dump and larger rear spoiler of the RSA.
How did the Euro RS save another 270 pounds over the RSA? I have weighed the following RSA and Euro RS parts and come up with the following savings on the Euro RS:
Rear luggage dump deleted= 19 pounds
RSA spoiler deleted= 9.5 pounds(normal C2 wing)
Bucket seats= 44 pounds
Euro RS bumpers= 12.5 pounds
Euro RS dummy fog lights= 2 pounds
Single mass flywheel= 15.4 pounds
Lightweight rear window= 5.5 pounds
Electronics mounts under seats= 4 pounds
Water bottle water (6.4 L)= 14 pounds
Magnesium wheels= 23.3 pounds
The above total 149 pounds.
The other approximately 121 pounds was saved by the following lightweight parts and deletions I have not been able to weigh:
Aluminum hood
Aluminum front hubs
Deleting all undercoating
Deleting alarm and central locking
A simplified lightweight wiring harness
Deleting sound deadening
Deleting airbag system and dashboard padding
Manual window winders
Lightweight door glass
Lighter 36 a/hr battery
The above measures saved somewhat more than 121 pounds since the electro hydraulic braking system of the Euro RS with it's pressure pump, pressure accumulator and heavier front discs and calipers added several pounds to the construction.
