With the combination of parts I'm using that is the necessary length. I am also able to use the less expensive 2.5 crank and finally use the smaller journal DSM aftermarket rods to aid in strength, weight and oiling. The crank work is only costing $500 so it is less than a core 3.0. If I were starting with a3.0 it would be an even longer stroke.

I have been kicking this around for awhile and seeing micheal mounts work it confirmed my ideas.

I should be able to pull off the whole build for 3500

That’s just to make sure that you remove all of the factory surface hardening that came with the crank!

Hopefully you won’t track (road race not drag) it because the factory hardening of the crank surface is worth its weight in gold when it comes to oiling. The only reason I have not had aftermarket custom cranks made is that none of the shops say they can equal the hardening of the stock crank bearing surface.

I guess I'll find out if the hardening process is up to snuff. I have had this done before to a Chevy crank and it held up well with steel rods. Of course it was a street/drag car so maybe that's why. I'll speak with the crank guy to see what his thoughts are on the hardness and depth. I'm not trying to build a grenade, but if it is, so be it. My money, my time. However, with all that said, I have noticed a fair amount of Porsche grenades listed here over the years, so I'm not overly impressed with the factory oiling capabilities. Just my .02

I don't want to derail this thread any further. I'll be doing a thread for the build soon and we can all discuss the merits/drawbacks then :-)

Hey Demetrios, how about some more details and pics of your setup? You should spend the $20 to join this forum and then you can post pics + video etc. Is your car running or are you still building the motor? What hp or kw & torque if it's running.

'86 944 turbo

Bore: 106mm dry sleeved
Stroke: 88
Pistons: Pauter
Rods: Pauter
Block: '88 turbo 3.1-ish (106mm)
Head: '86
Turbo: Precision .62
Engine Management: Electromotive Tec-S
Other: lots.. fabspeed 3" hi-flow exhaust, custom powder coated 4-1 headers (SFR), fuel rail (SFR), air intake (SFR), intercooler (SFR), larger upgraded aluminum radiator (SFR), big brake kit, koni coilovers, aluminum race torque tube, raceware head/stud package, 968 throttle body.. just too much to list..

35k (engine, brakes, fuel system, parts, electronics, labor etc) and 1 1/2 years into this build, but hope to have it complete in the next week or 2 at the latest.

Latest little hiccup with a cracked sleeve on #4 cylinder, when 'fixing' it, the machine shop ended up cracking the block and replaced it with an '88 turbo core. sigh..

Pictures below are of the original '86 core. just some shots, thought i'd share

Looks like it's time to update the list. Looking forward to hearing how it feels when you get it sorted Scott -- and nice first post. Glad to hear Tim is still at it after all.

Anybody know what happened to Rolex and his build? Haven't heard a word in quite a while...?
