928s for Sale
#6961
A brand new forum member with some questions about trying to buy a 928 through Craigslist. I guess the main problem might be that I'm an overseas buyer (Finland, Europe) and might be considered as being some sort of scam artist or too much hassle. Here is an example of a car in New York. Even though New York cars might have more rust the land and sea shipping shipping costs are lower. I also have to factor in that my country charges VAT 24% calculated by adding the purchase price AND shipping costs together.

I tried to contact the seller through email since there is no phone number showing and considering the time difference email is also very easy. I got no answer from the seller and I have only gotten a response from two sellers out of 10 different cars I have sent email to. So what I'm wondering here is.
Are the adverts showing only email contact form some sort of scams?
Or can't I just see the phone number in some cases since my account is listed as being in a different country? I actually tried changing this and seemed to make no difference.
Since the advert is a couple of weeks old don't people bother removing the advert if the car is sold?
Am I just considered to be too much hassle since I'm from another country? Should I just focus looking at the cars for sale in ebay?
From my point of view the selling/buying process is very easy in a modern world. Just sitting on your computer. Transfer the money through paypal or web bank, order transportation and ask the seller to send the title through a courier. Pick up the car from a harbour. I have bought one car from Copart auction and one from Japanese auctions. A number of cars from Germany. Things have always been relatively simple to arrange, so I'm just a bit surprised of contacting difficulties through Craigslist.

928s go to other countries from the U.S. all the time. I'd look for a broker or agent to act on your behalf.

Yep keep looking. Plan to budget 20kish to finally have a driver quality example. This can be by acquiring a (running and driving) example for around 5k and adding $15k of labor and parts over time. I am a big proponent of the 5 year plan. Take your time and slowly restore as your time and budget allows.

If your open to any model year, tranny and color combo, then there are plenty to chose from under $20k. Just be sure to get a PPI done first. Plenty of 928ers in your area that could lend a hand there. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips! In a perfect world, I would like a manual transmission petrol blue 928 with pasha interior (if that's even possible). But honestly, when all is said and done, I would just want something that drives well. I think my price range is anywhere from 5k-15k. I don't mind working on a car over time assuming I can happily drive it in the meantime. A manual transmission is probably a higher priority for me, but then again, I find myself drooling over the petrol blues quite a bit...and pasha interior is just so, so, sweet!
I like sunroofs in most cars but this community seems fond of the cars that don't have them...do they cause more problems than they are worth? My 944 had a pretty pitiful sunroof, but I still really liked it. Any opinion on this?

I wouldn't want to do that since I consider finding cars part of the hobby. Paying to a broker for me feels like paying for someone to play football on your behalf. Also I'm not made of money so in my eyes paying 1000 USD to a broker for making a couple of phone calls equals the amount I would spend on a respray or something similar.

In my opinion you should avoid places like Craigslist. There might be better deals there but it will be hard to find someone that will respond to you, won't try to scam you or even be willing to deal with an overseas buyer.
On the other hand, Rennlisters regularly list cars for sale and as fellow enthusiasts, I think they'll be a lot more willing to work with you. Their listings will also come with the added guarantee of their reputation and often a documented history of how they've treated the car. Another good option might be bringatrailer.com since they do a reasonable amount of vetting for each listing and the seller will know you're serious with the bidding.
Either that or make a friend with someone that also appreciates 928's and is willing to go check out cars and make arrangements on your behalf.
On that note - My 1979 928 is for sale. I can't send you a PM for some reason but feel free to email me at nelak@binarybandit.com if you're interested. Its definitely a project so I'm not going to promise anything other than the engine turns over and runs and the body was covered in primer and the car prepped for paint (but hasn't been painted yet).

I did happen to find your girl...she lives in Sweden. She's not perfect but she is cute. 205,000km (127k miles). She is also $16k Euro.

Petrol blue, pasha, sunroof delete, 5-speed, a stack of crisp $100 bills in the glove box...how are your unicorn hunting skills? I'm only joking with you (really, no harm intended) but that wish list does narrow the window considerably. I'm sure you know petrol was only offered for a few years as was the pasha. 5-speeds are a bit easier to find in the early years but $5-15k for those specs isn't likely. I have that car with everything but the pasha (cork leather instead) and $15k would be a little low, at least for me.

I'll admit, my wish list is specific but it's nice to dream sometimes. My wife did mention that she has always wanted to travel to Sweden before...
Thanks for the lead...now, how do I fly that baby over to Vermont...?

You and I have the same 928 goal right there. Also my favorite combo for an early car. Petrol Blue is my favorite color on the 928s. But yeah good luck finding that combo for 15k. If your are lucky a 3speed auto with blown out pasha and petrol blue might pop up in your range. At least then you can restore it to a nice condition over time.
As for the sunroof, I personally like mine. It does not leak and works great. If you are taller, say 6' 3" and above, then not having one does give about an inch and a half more headroom.

Edit - the swedish petrol blue 928 with Pasha has already been discovered here.;-)According to a selling platform (blocket) the price has been reduced from 16000€ to roundabout 13000€:

Great minds think alike... I've always wanted a PetrolBlu w/ Pasha too! The Sweet Sweet Swedish model BlauerStahl shared is Awesome & a fair/low price -I'd think it'll sell fast.?. An AT wouldn't bother me if I found a good one in western US. I'm on my 3rd 928 now - '86.5 928S AT Silver/Black leather, snrf. & RMB. -Enjoyed and driven regularly past 4 years while improving it -Tune, Brakes, Fluids, etc. & recent (average) repaint & it's always performed excellently without stalls/smoke/drama & 97% of everything works well. -Also had '88 & '90 928S4s -this '86.5 seems more raw, less troubled & more fun. -But I must sell it now -hopefully to someone who will keep it excellent or better... along with thoroughly driving it!. I'll assist any buyer with transport -or personally drive/deliver it within 1500 miles. It's such a blast on road trips & seems to love 100mph -or I do..!
Please review my CL post/link - it's also on PCA classifieds, oodle, oldcaronline, cars.com, etc. Gladly discuss and promptly reply to seriously interested buyers/brokers.

I think you should just use it as an excuse to tour Europe. Fly over, buy the car, drive it around the alps and the autobahn before dropping it off at a port and then pick it up in NY and drive it home. Tell your wife how the vacation is practically paid for with how much money you'll save on getting the car home + transportation costs in Europe. This is all assuming you buy a car in great running and driving condition of course...

I recently did this. Flew from NY to see an old Lancia in mainland Europe. Checked the car out, did the deal, road-tripped in it, then took a car ferry to UK, drove it to the docks at Liverpool, UK (I flew home) and the Lancia made it back to Newark, NJ after 10-days on a boat (R-O-R not individual container, from my research this is not only cheaper but safer). I think shipping and insurance with brokerage help on customs paperwork cost me $1250-$1500.
Picked the car up at Newark port and drove it 3-hours home. With Hagerty towing coverage giving me peace of mind. Fun experience. Recommend it!

You can probably call up UPS and they'll handle the entire thing door-to-door. You can also call logistics companies that will shop it around to multiple carriers and coordinate to try and get the lowest price and then mark it up for their own profit. You could try and coordinate it all yourself. From what I've heard, shipping costs for a car on a ship are similar to a full price plane ticket for a person but that's port to port. Transport from landlocked Sweden to a major port would be extra, and from New York to Vermont even more...
