This thread is useful for education, the only waste is that it is not the first time newbie 928'rs and 911 guys have needed a lesson.
THE 928 WAS THE FLAGSHIP, IT COST MORE BECAUSE IT WAS BETTER AT EVERYTHING.
The 911 is also very nice, just 2nd. Once you learn these facts everything will be good. The 1 time they raced in the hands of real racedrivers the 928 spanked the legendary 930 on the NBR.

See above ^^, that is a N/A 928 beating a TURBO 911. If you want to live in fantasyland, like some clearly do, than just imagine if Porsche did back then what it does today to all models. Just imagine if Porsche made a 928 turbo S in the same way it makes a Panamera turbo S or Cayenne turbo S. In 1985 a 928 Turbo S would have had at least 450 Hp and Tq and 0-60 of 3.9.

At two recent PCA gatherings, I've had a younger 964 owner express to me his blatant disdain for 928s. Whats interesting is that he is a mechanic employed by Brumos Porsche! I wonder if the management at Brumos would approve of one of their employees insulting Porsche owners at PCA meetings, ie: potential customers of their service dept, or parts, or future car purchases. Although none of my current P-Cars came from Brumos, my 1st 911 cab was from them & they did all the service in the 5 yrs I owned it. The 2nd time "Mr. Downer" reiterated his negative feelings about 928s, I replied, "Oh Don't Worry, You'll NEVER Work on Mine!"
A few months back, when a PCA officer 1st saw our 968 cab, he didn't realize his glowing compliment of the 968 also came across as a bit of a "dis" on our 928s. He said, "Oh, I Like This One!" Came across in a tone that said he finally approved of our choice of a Porsche & didn't like our other two. To which I quickly replied with a smile, "What, Are You Saying, You Don't Like Our Other Ones???" He was backtracking when he realized how his honesty actually sounded. I was ok with it cause he only meant to compliment the 968.
People who don't like 928s probably either don't know much about them & are goin with the flow of what they've heard. Or maybe they had a bad experience with one. Another PCA'er told me this week how he had a Brown n Tan '78 5 speed that he bought new. I told him its a shame he doesn't still have it. He said it was back in the dealership every month & that the clutch burned up in it. Said it like he thought 928s were a Yugo & maybe his experience was such. He now drives a very sharp lookin Panamera.
Its all good to me, anyone being derogatory towards a 928 won't cause me to not want to own them. Might make me want to pitch their positive attributes, knowing it'll most likely not change their opinions either. I do like to occasionally remind people that the 928 was hand built, was the top of the line Porsche when in production, & typically sold for about $20k more than a 911. I kinda like "Goin Against the Flow" & shakin things up a bit. At least usually gives a conversation starter.

The 928 is a GT and the 911 is a Sports Car (....at least it was until they started to morph the 911 into a 928 with the 996)
If I didn't have my replica Cobra I would probably own an older 911 to fill my need for a pure sports car, and to perfect my skills at adjusting valves.

Porsche learned that a "true Porsche" has to have certain styling cues. This make some owners happy that they have a Porsche and the world's ********* know that other people know they have a Porsche. The freaking SUV has the "classic" 356C-style hood and headlights. And that has made it their best seller!

I had a Porsche mechanic follow me for a few laps at Arroyo Seco one day. He was driving a decked-out 911 that he trailered to the event.
Of course he ended up passing me, but afterwards he complimented "You can really throw that thing around!" (There was one section of track, an off-camber, increasing radius turn that I would pull monster powerslides out of, just for fun. I think he was surprised I didn't loop the car)
This was the same guy who previously told me that he doesn't work on 928's.
I asked, "Why, are they too complicated?"
He replied, "Naw, the owners are too cheap!"
