The world is full of *********.

********* want to draw attention to themselves so, unfortunately, a Porsche is a vehicle of choice for them.

The 911 is closer to being a "****" mobile by far. Adolf Hitler commissioned the "Bug" which the 911 is a direct descendant to/of. He wanted a "peoples" car. The 928 was a clean sheet new design in the mid 70's and did not have anything to do with Hitler or the rear engine bug that ALL 911's spawned from.

Most really serious "car guys" I know respect the 928 for the car that it is, and for its under-appreciated status that it has. These aren't the usual tool that buys a 911 after the divorce because "it's the car to have" and don't wave when you drive by. But guys that have Astons, Ford GT's, Lambos, and FCars in addition to their stable.

Funny you say that; saw my next door neighbor this morning-asked if he wanted to trade rides (has some 2011 Aston in front of the house today). He said yeah-the Aston was boring and sterile.

The good news is he'll have an Audi R10 in a few days and we'll go take a ride...

The same phenomena is reflected in Corvette ownership as well. There are some owners, like yourself, whom drive a 911 for the reasons you state, but I posture you are a minority 911 owner. Very, very, few people buy and own a 928 because it is popular. It never was, most likely never will be, hence my "popular" statement.

I'd say that there's no err here... You imply, I infer.... whatever...

Regardless of the issue, I'll maintain that you do deserve respect.

Cheers, my good man.

911? Isn't that the car that killed Pelly Lindber (Philadelphia Flyers goalie) a few years back?

The bottom comment hits the reality bullseye ----- If we could go back in time and do an experiment where we would offer a 928 to all 911 buyers back in the 1980's for the same price they were about to spend on the 911, my belief from experience is that you would be well over 90% taking that offer.

Contrary to what some say the 928 was extremely popular and drooled over, but it cost as much as a middle class house did so not many could afford it. and the FACTS are that it did everything better than the 911, everything acceleration, braking, cornering, looks, feel, sound, interior ..............

I think I said above I like all cars including 911's but numbers are numbers, and video is video
This thread starts to remind me the BS threads between 993 vs 996.

From someone who happen to have owned a 924, 968 and presently my 928 and my 993, statements like the above are sorry to say, way off the mark.

Why? a 911 and a 928 are fundamentally different cars in the way they drive, feel and perform all together. Reading statements like the above poster that the 928 is better than the 911 in everything simply make me laugh. They are along the same line of thinking that the original poster complaint about.

Simply ignorant.

I can understand though the ignorance if you have not lived and breathed these cars. I love both my Porsche cars. For different reasons.

So I will attempt to give you my personal feedback, which is ofcourse biased as it is based on my personal preferences in a car.

928 vs 993:

Street performance:
The 928 is a GT car. Comfortable, supremely capable, fast and oh my lord stable like no other car. The ideal daily driver and cruiser. By comparison the 993 is less comfortable and somewhat sensitive in high wind situations in the stock form. The pedal placement is also off center somewhat and it has less cockpit space for someone as grand in size as I am. Both in my view are equally fast, plenty fast for any street fun. 1 point for the 928

The twisty bits:
The 928 is porkly. Heavy and you feel the weight. I dont get a ton of communication from the chassis by comparison. With a stiffer suspension I suppose things will improve, but i feel that all that weight, when it comes to the chassis dynamics cant compare with the 993. By comparison, the 993 is very nimble, ultra responsive to direction change, you can really feel the difference. The chassis talk to you constantly and with the engine back there, the steering is absolutely perfect. Point and shoot. That is a huge difference with the steering being really different than the 928. The 928 steering I find it lacks feedback compared to the 993. Infinitely better than my wifes mercedes or any modern econo box, but compared to a 911 its worse. 1 point for the 993

Sound:
A VERY subjective matter. The flat six at full song manages to make the hair on the back of my neck stand. Goosebumps. I like the V8 fine, but I like the flat 6 more. This one since its so subjective its a toss.

Usability:
I feel that the 928 has the upper hand here due to cavernous trunk space and comfort. Great torque V8, plenty of power. I can drive this every day till I die and most likely will Like I said above. The perfect GT.

Driver engagement:
I feel that the old school aircooled 911's are more engaging just because the way they drive. As I said before, the chassis communication has no comparison in stock form between the 2. I also happen to fancy the old school big old tach in my face, the direct shifting and gear ratios on my G50/21. the forward visibility, the way the 993 keeps me alert when the speeds climb, the way the hot oil smells after a long drive, the way the exhaust is burbling when lifting the throttle, the engine spinning faster compared to the somewhat lazy V8.

My final verdict? This video:

Sorry your new to 928's "", your personal anecdotes mean nothing. My personal experience starts in 82 driving these 928's and 911's. My Euro is NOT heavy and I don't feel the weight in the "twisty bits" and my exhaust can be heard over a mile away

I don't care about your experience or mine for that matter, I care about facts in all areas the 928 was better than the 911 until they scuttled it.

Do you know more than Tony Lapine knew?

“Give us credit that we learned a bit during the 20 or so years that we built the rear engine sports car and we had a few ideas how to improve on it. That's why 911 drivers don't like the 928, it doesn't feel like it’s handling properly because the onset of all the bad habits of the 911 are pushed much higher up the overall performance curve. It is very hard to make it do the bad things a 911 chassis will do and so it’s perceived to be sluggish or heavy. In fact if you look at the speedo or tach you are actually eating up the terrain at a much higher level with more confidence. That was our goal. "

Do you know more than Ferry and all the other execs and engineers at Porsche? They built a better car in all respects and charged a lot more for it.

Learn the facts, then maybe ask yourself why you're off the mark.

You are right about the 928 and the corvette, it is one of the 2 most similar modern cars to the 928. But the one that is even closer is the merc AMG SLS. The SLS build is so close to the 928 it is almost a twin, structure-wise.

This thread is wasting many things. A few that come to mind.

1. time
2. disk space
3. Internet bandwidth
4. brain waves

I can't believe adults are getting into a "my X is better than their Y" pissing contest. Grow up people. Enjoy what you have, don't waste time on what other people think of your toys, and don't trash their toys.

Geez.

Its too bad that any person that really enjoys cars has to make such a comment. To make matters worse it's a person that drives the same brand. I don't worry about comparing models, they are all terrific.
